Preschool evening show

I just got an email invite to an arts show at DD's preschool in a couple of weeks- it's basically for the kids to show parents the artistic work they've been doing in school. It's from 6:30-7:30. I'm wondering if we're super lame parents now, b/c our kids are usually in bed by 7:30 and I'm kind of surprised a 3 yo class would have something that late. We'll go and I won't say anything to the teacher but I'm wondering if a 7-7:30 bedtime is outrageous for a 3 year old? DD stopped napping before she hit two and a half and has always gone to bed on the early side.

Re: Preschool evening show

  • Just have to say you're kids are adorable! My son (just turned 3) still naps for about 45 min in the early afternoon and he goes to bed at 7:15. He went through a phase of not napping and would be in bed at 7 and asleep at 7:05 and wake up at 7am. Now we stick to 7:15 and he's out by 8:30 and wakes by 645am. Earlier bed times work the best for our DS and family. If that's what your family does, keep doing it! You know what's best. Don't feel lame :)

  • PS. I think a preschool evening show at that time is outrageous! (What happened to family dinners?)

:) Thanks! Most of the other parents in the class have a 3 year old and older kids so maybe they're used to later bedtimes- I was just really surprised at the time of the show.

  • I know some families like mine don't get home till 6 and than we have to eat dinner so I can understand why a teacher would have that schedule.  For us it isn't too late b/c my kids sleep in till 8:30-9 and have a later bed time since (it works well for us b/c I have in home care and Harm's pre-k is the afternoon session.  For many of my friends that is WAY too late b/c they have schedules like yours.

Ideally it would be nice to have a long span to accommodate early birds like your family and those families that get later starts in the evening like mine.  Poor teachers trying to balance things.

  • My DD is 3 and she hasn't napped since she was 23 months.  Her bedtime is 8pm, but lately she's been playing quietly up in her room until 9ish before she falls asleep.  I bet the later time is to accommodate parents who work so that they can get home, have dinner, and see the show.

  • Weird, our school is doing the same thing. We're just going to do an early dinner, go right at 6 and hopefully be at home in time for bed.

And no, it's not weird that your kids are in bed early. Only recently did DD start going to sleep later. She was 7/730 for a long time (she's 4 now).

This is exactly what I was going to write.  I know that if DH was going to attend something with us before 6:30 or so (I'm a SAHM so could accommodate an earlier time w/o him) he'd either have to wait until after the program to eat while the kids and I ate before hand.  (No way the kids could wait to eat until afterward.)  My MOPS group meets at 6:30, and it's sometimes hard to get supper over with and make it there on time if I'm waiting for DH to get home and keep DD while DS and I go.

Like francisca though, my 3yo sleeps later in the a.m. to make up for a later bedtime.

No.  My DD went to bed by 7-7:30 at 3 -3.5 and now is closer to 8 but that still is really late for a preschool class.

  • Well I have the same thing going on sort of... My DD is in a 3K program and the 4K program has graduation on Thursday.   The teacher thought it would be a wonderful idea for the 3's to sing a couple songs at this celebration.  The only thing that bugs me is that it is at 6:00.  That is dinnertime in our house.  I get done with work at 5, drive home, start making dinner and then we eat.  I think it would be better if graduation was at 7 than at 6, but then it might interupt some children's 7:30 bedtimes.  Oh well.

  • I would not go to a preschool event that started at 6:30.  My kids go to sleep during the week at around 7, 7:30 at the latest.  They wake up at around 6:15am!!!  I would say something to the director about it.  I am sure they are trying to please parents that work but that is just way to late.  When my daycare does open houses, they hold them from 5-6:30 which I think is great timing.

  • I dunno - it's one night right?  I am all for changing the routine for a special event.

ETA:  My boys head to bed around 8:00.

  • It is kinda late, but it's one night.  Our Spring musical is at 7pm and the girls just had it.  It's only for 3s and 4s.  I know some of them are up late, but it's nice because the working parent(s) can make it where they can't always get time off from work to get to the stuff during the day.  I didn't mind it.  My girls usually go to bed around 8ish but DS is closer to 7.  Everyone was just up a little late that night.  It's not like it's every night.
  • I don't think a 730pm betime is outragious.  Ours is 8pm.  However, we don't mind making exceptions for one night.  I bet its hard either way, working parents have to feed their kids & get to the venue before it starts and yet bed time is just around the corner. Rock meet hard place.  MH hates the 6pm time because that's what time he gets off work.  It makes it hard for me because until he get there I have the boys by myself.   I remind him that its the best time because it allows for ample time for bedtime routine.  He doesn't work a job where leaving early is easily done.

This exactly!  It's not like they're starting the evening at 7:30, which would seem to me to be a bit more unreasonable.  It's not going to kill anyone to get off schedule for an evening here & there.

  • It's just one night.  Your schedule may change but think of it as practice for when your child goes to elementary school.  Programs are usually always later to bc of working families.
