Activity Gym/ Bumbo question

Our little one hates tummy time. He'd rather be sitting up seeing everything. If he is on his activity gym he likes to be on his back batting at the toys. How long does your little one do tummy time? If you have a bumbo chair how long does your LO sit in it. My cousins LO has been on his back so much his head is super flat. He has to wear a helmet 24/7 until he is 1. I don't see any flat spots on Ty but I am paranoid. He spends most of the time on his back.

Re: Activity Gym/ Bumbo question

  • DS spends all his time on his back too. Like you, I don't see any flat spots, but I'm paranoid. He doesn't spend time on his tummy either because every time I put him down on it, he rolls right over! I really don't know what to do. He hates the bumbo and won't sit with me for very long. I just try to keep him moving from the activity gym, bouncer, and swing. I know he is using the back of his head for all those things, but I just keep hoping it's in different spots! I can't imagine him having to wear a helmet!

This is what I am hoping for. I feel so guilty like he should spend more than 10 min a day off his head, but everything he likes is on his back. I can only hold him for so long. Sometimes he likes the baby bjorn but it is hit or miss. and still even in that his head is hitting the back of it. I am constantly examining his head on a daily basis.

  • Babies R Us and Pottery Barn both sell something called a noggin nest. Both are made by boppy. PB is more expensive due to the outer cover. I use this when Brynn is on her back under her gym and when ever she is in anything else. I don't use it at night when she sleeping.
  • A spends the majority of his time on his back because he hates tummy time, as well. I've found that rolling up a receiving blanket and propping him up a bit helps him enjoy it longer because he can look around. Also, he loves to "fly", sit on our laps, and practice standing, so we can keep him off his back for a little while each day doing those activities.

  • We do tummy time a couple times each day... it usually lasts 2 to 5 minutes.  She loves her Bumbo and sits there for up to 10 minutes.  She really enjoys sitting up so I sit her on my lap a lot too.

  • I understand LO shouldn't use the Bumbo if they can't keep their head up.  Is that true?  It's frustrating b/c I want LO to use it prevent flat head but his neck isn't strong enough yet so it's a catch 22.  Right?
  • My DD loves to be held over the shoulder so she can be upright and see everything.  I've also been sitting her on the couch in the crack between the cushions and she seems to like that.  She's not a huge fan of the tummy time...she usually gets mad and flips herself over.

  • DS hates tummy time unless it is on my or MH's chest.

He loves his activity gym though and spends probably anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour a day (stretched out separately). We also have a bumbo but he doesn't care for that much because it squishes his tummy so that is rarely used.

DS doesn't have any flat spots and my pedi actually commented on how perfectly round his head looked (I giggled at the compliment).

Ours is pretty good at holding his head up, but I only let him sit in it for about 5 min at a time. I also put a little pillow behind him to support his neck a bit.

  • There's no harm in trying the Bumbo.  What are you worried about?  You'll be right there and if it's not working out you can pull him/her out.  With all of the motor skills we learn in life, practice makes perfect.
