If you have a nanny...

We're planning to hire a nanny to watch our four-month old twins when I return to work in July.  Basically, I'm wondering if it's worth it to use a nanny placement agency, versus trying to find someone on my own.

If you've hired a nanny, how did you find your nanny?  Through an agency? website (i.e. care.com or sittercity)?  some other resource?  I'd love to hear people's thoughts/experience with the quality of candidates and the overall process.

 Thanks!

  • We've had two nannies and I cannot recommend enough the path of using a nanny placement agency.

At friend recommendations, we hired our first nanny from CraigsList.  Apparently everyone else we know had done this and it went well for them.  For us, it wasn't such a slam dunk.  Our first nanny was not super motivated (though she did a fine job with an infant).

We hired our second nanny after my second daughter was born and went through White House Nannies.  The experience was awesome and worth every penny.  This woman is so organized and focused on our girls.  Worth...every...penny!

I'm sure others have had good experiences with other agencies as well.

  • A friend of mine who also has twins, and she recommended White House Nannies when hiring a nanny for the first time. She had a great experience. They had their original nanny for years but recently needed to hire someone else, and went through care.com. They have had a good experience but that's because they knew what to look for and how to manage a nanny after the previous years experience.

  • Your babies are so cute!

We hired someone off of DC Urban Mom, and we've been really happy.  We were this close to trying an agency, but then interviewed and hired our current nanny.

My sense is that the nannies from the agencies would have been more, and the placement fee was several thousand dollars.  We were really at the top of our budget to begin with, so I was hesitant to try an agency (more because of the per/hour rate than the upfront cost).  I could be wrong though since we never actually explored the agency other than to get some idea of initial costs.
