Post partum pre-eclampsia and hypertension

So a week after LO and I left the hospital I was admitted back in for four nights with post partum preeclampsia that turned into hypertension.  I was on a 24hour magnesium drip (awful) and put on meds to regulate my BP.  I think I am on the mend and am feeling much better.  The doctors say that within 4-6 weeks everything should be regulated and I will most likely be able to come off the medication. I wanted to see if anyone had experience with this and can share some positive stories.  Thanks!

Re: Post partum pre-eclampsia and hypertension

  • I had pre-e with my first son. I had high bp probably till around 3 months.

It took a while for it to return to normal for some people.

I'm so sorry you dealt with that! I had a BP spike for a few hours and had to go back to L&D a week PP but it came down on its own.

Mag is the devils juice so I am so sorry you had to be on that!

  • I developed high BP at 37 weeks that turned into PreE b/w 38 and 39 weeks.  Once I delivered, it took about 3 weeks for it to return to normal.  I could tell that I needed to go off the BP meds because I started feeling tired and dizzy all the time.  I hear you about the mag sulfate.  Having had both mag and pitocin, I'll take the pit any day.

  • at my 37 week, i was admitted to the hospital for observation for high bp which continued to climb throughout that night.  was diagnosed with pre-e and put on mag as well, induced (failed) and then sectioned.  i was discharged from the hospital with my bp still elevated a bit over normal, but i'm on two different medications for it. been back to the doctor twice for bp checks, once was ok once was a little high.  i get checked again tomorrow.  my doctor said it could take 4-6 weeks or longer to regulate back to normal.

  • Hi...sorry for butting into your group, (I'm a Sept 2013 Mom) but I found this post by doing a search on postpartum pre-eclampsia. Just curious to see how you are doing, and if you're still having bp issues? The reason I ask is because I have postpartum pre-eclampsia ( found 4 days after csection, then got pneumonia because of it, 10 days in the hospital). I'm still dealing with fluctuating blood pressure, with no end in sight. Any search I do on postpartum preeclampsia comes up with very few answers, and especially the answer I want: how long will this last? Thanks for any info, and hope you & your LO are doing well!
