3rd Trimester

I did it! (Update on Prodromal Labor & Castor Oil)

After the last 6 days of prodromal labor I decided to take 2 tbsp of castor oil in my milkshake last night. (really didn't taste that bad)

And let me tell you something......lol
I had the absolute WORST night in the world.
I had the worst back labor. Abdominal cramps, back cramps and contractions came and went allllll night. It was ~horrible~
(No bathroom trips, amazingly though!)

We confirmed today at the doctor that he is sunny side up.
I went from being 60-70% effaced & 1 cm last week to being 75% effaced and 2 cm today. (whether or not that was because of the oil is anyone's guess.)

It seems as though this baby will NEVER make his way out, no matter what desperate attempts I make =(

Re: I did it! (Update on Prodromal Labor & Castor Oil)

  • Maybe baby isn't ready to come out yet. You're 38 weeks (if your ticker is correct) so perhaps the little guy still needs some cooking time. I can imagine how uncomfortable you probably feel right now, and I know that come July I'll probably be miserable, but I want my LO to stay in there for as long as he has to.

    Good luck!

  • Is your ticker correct? You are 37 weeks and 3 days and are resorting to castor oil? Is this your first baby? I don't mean to flame you and  I get that you are uncomfortable believe me, but it doesn't seem like your baby is ready and you are not even at your due date. I have been walking around with contractions for 2 weeks (at 36 weeks I was 2 cm, 75% effaced, haven't been checked since-but 2nd baby so I don't read much into it), but I am not remotely ready to try castor oil yet, perhaps because I have horrible IBS and just the thought makes my stoamch hurt. Is your doctor suggesting you try this?

I agree with PP. I know we all want these last few weeks to be over, but you don't want to force a baby that isn't ready. Plus, as you learned, they can't be forced and all we can do for sure is make ourselves miserable. I would also want to try to get the baby into a better position before labor if I was you.
  • I went and read your original post because I had no clue what prodrmal labor was.  I am so sorry you have to go through that.  What a pain (pun intended LOL)

I don't have any advice but I hope that L&D goes well for you and the false contractions subside for you

  • I agree with previous post. Why are you trying to induce labor at only 38 weeks? You baby still needs to cook.
  • WHY???? I get that the contractions suck, but leave your little one alone and let him/her come when he/she is ready. I have had prodromal labor for the past two weeks. I was put on procardia to help stop the contractions and am still having them but I am doing everything to keep her in until I hit 37 weeks when my MW will take me off the meds but even after that I will just leave her alone and let her do her thing. I was surprised to see that you are only 37 weeks along and trying things that most women reserve for after 40 weeks. Is this something your MD has suggested and are there medical reasons for you to try to induce your own labor?

Oh Jesus leave her alone, she's full term and miserable. FULL TERM=FULLY BAKED.

  • If you are facing an induction if this doesn't work, then it is understandable.  I have to be induced next week (medical) and am doing anything and everything to just get to at least 1 cm to make things go easier.  I'm at zero, not even soft or anything as of this morning.  Anything and everything except the Castor Oil, I will save the appointment I have two days before induction if I **have** to.

I really hope I don't have too, yikes.

Yeah... that's not true. If 37 weeks was when babies were supposed to be born, average gestational period would not be 40-41 weeks. I don't know her backstory (sounds like there might be one?) so I won't comment on her ambitious attempts... but the notion that you have to kick your child out when you turn 37 weeks is insane.

  • Well, I'm already IN labor. I've been in labor for a week as of tomorrow...So it's not like I was attempting to put myself into labor; I was merely trying to speed things up. I am completely miserable...not getting any sleep & am constantly in pain.

I have made it full-term...and that was originally me and my doctor's goal, because we had such a problem with PTL. We're ecstatic that we made it this far, but we believe that this baby is definately ready to come out.

My doctor is fully aware of all of this and had no disagreement of my doing this; however, we were unaware that he was sunny side up until this morning.

  • You're 38 weeks? Why are you in such a hurry? Most women go beyond 40 weeks... If you were 40+ weeks, I would understand the rush, but 38...?

She's already clarified that she's not "in a rush," she's been in early labor for a few days now, and her doctor is being updated on everything. 38 weeks is not looked at as "early" if one were to go into labor, all they do the last 2 weeks is put on weight, and DOCTORS consider 38 weeks+ "Full Term," so I do not understand all the "oh my god, let your baby cook some more!"
And as for "why," gee, I don't know, maybe it's because pregnancy sucks, being enormous sucks, and day after day of painful contractions without going into active labor is horribly frustrating; I've been experiencing the same thing for almost a week.

(I'm bitchy today. I'm due and I want my baby. Sorry.)

  • Im sorry you hurt but the last few weeks are important for the baby.

Look at it this way you aren't in active labor yet or your body would be doing more. If you were in active labor you'd be dilating (most likely at a faster rate) at least it isn't that bad yet.

If the baby isn't ready to come out nothing is going to make him come out. Even all the contractions and such wont make him come if he doesn't want to. Your body is just getting ready for the big day.

I AGREE...they call it full term for a reason..lol I am going to trust all the medical professionals over bump posters when it comes to my baby being fully developed. Just sayin.

And I thought that the week that I quit smoking (years ago) was the worst week of my life. I now have to seriously reconsider how unpleasant it was given this new reference.

  • EW! I have to say you are brave! It's good that you have some progress! I hope you get to have you baby soon so you can get some relief! Good vibes coming your way!

  • I think that unless any woman has been in labor for a freaking WEEK they do not have a valid opinion on this matter!  I wish you the best of of luck getting that baby out- good Lord, I can't even imagine!!  fwiw, both of my kids came early on their own- one at 37w3d & the other at 36w6d and they were both healthy & came out screaming.
  • I've been told to only take castor oil in the morning if you are going to go that route!
