Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding and have to get wisdom teeth out

So, I have four impacted wisdom teeth that need to come out.  I am not the type of person that can possibly handle having them do this while I am awake.  They plan on giving me and iv and I am semi conscience during the procedure.  Now I assume this is not drugs that my baby should not be exposed to.  Has anyone had this done before?  My girlfriend just had this done and she has been on vicodin (sp?) for the first four or five days and she only had one impacted.  I have four...ugh.  I am not sure what to do.  I know that I will have to stop breastfeeding for a bit while I do this but I only have a hand pump and get only a few ounces out so theres no way to get any sort of supply going before I do this.  And suggestions?  How long does it take for the iv drugs to get out of my breast milk?  Any help or advice would be great.  Thanks

  • You could consider renting a hospital pump for a short time.  When I had my wisdom teeth out I was only on pain meds for a day but they weren't impacted, so I'm no help.  Sorry!

  • You may be surprised to find out that some of those drugs are compatible to breastfeeding, or the doctor may be able to suggest some that are.  I think you need to be asking the health professionals these questions.

  • Im having my gallbladder out next week and I spoke with my doc and my OB and both said to just pump once or twice afterward until I feel the anestesia is out my system and then I can resume BF'ing that evening.  Also, vicodin or percoset are perfectly compatible with BF'ing.  They are commonly given after a c-section.  You should be fine!

I had mine out it the fall  and I think I only missed one nursing session and that was mostly because I was in pain and it was hard to put my 3 month old up to my chest where I had an incision. I'd call a Lactation Consultant or pharmacist with the meds the dentist is planning to use just to be sure they are ok.
