Breastfeeding

First Years Breastflow?

Have any of you tried these?  I plan on pumping once I return to work, but would still like to breastfeed when I'm home.  I know there are several brands of bottles on the market that claim to make it easier to switch between breast/bottle, and I'm looking for input from moms who have been there!  Dr. Browns?  First Years?  Playtex Drop-Ins?

Re: First Years Breastflow?

  • We used BreastFlow from 4-12 weeks!

Then he got annoyed with them so we switched to Dr. Brown's and Avent. He also gets Tommy Tippee but is still on stage 1 nipple for TT because theirs are very fast.

  • We have always used these bottles and have never had any problems with them.  I've heard that the Dr. Brown's are a PITA to clean so I didn't try them.

They have a lot of parts. I agree, that can be really annoying. DH likes them so he cleans them when he uses them!

    The nanny prefers Avent.

  • We had one of these when we first introduced the bottle when DD was a few weeks old.  She took to it fine.

Before I went back to work we introduced the Medela bottle - the bottle and nipple that came with my PISA - and she took that fine too.  It saves me a bunch of time because I only have to deal with one set of bottles and can just portion out what I pump at work and then screw on a nipple cap when I get home and it's all set for the next day.

I would really advise not buying any more than two or three bottles of different types before your LO is born.  You just can't know what he or she will prefer and you can get bottles anywhere, so they're easy enough to pick up when you need to buy more.

  • They fall apart. After about 6-8 weeks the inner nipple gets all warped and they don't work well. We switched to Medela and are very happy with them. Also tried Tommee Tippee closer to nature, but the slow flow was way too fast.

This. I had 2 kinds of bottles (actually, 3 including the Medela bottle and nipple that came with my PISA) when DS was born--Evenflo glass bottles and Breastflow bottles. Well, he didn't do well with any of the 3 bottles. So we tried the Tommee Tippee ones. He took well to those but was extremely gassy. Then I tried the Playtex Ventaire (wide nipple) and those helped with the gas, so now we use them pretty much exclusively, although every now and then I'll give him a Tommee Tippee.

  • We just gave LO her first bottle on Saturday but this is what we're using. She did great with it. At first she didn't want it (because I think that she thought it was just a pacifier) but as soon as we squeezed a few drops into her mouth, she was all over it.

  • We use Tommee Tippee on the rare occasion that he gets a bottle and haven't had any problems.

I seriously bought 10 different types of bottles before we found one that she liked.  I can't tell you what an expensive experience that was.  FWIW, she didn't like the First Years Breastflow....but she also didn't like 8 other bottles.  We settled on the Nuk.

And BTW - they ALL say "closest to nature" "most like the breast" "just like Mom" etc, etc.  And frankly, no bottle could EVER come close to replicating the form and function of nursing.

  • We used these up until about 4 months, they were the slowest flow we could find and worked really well. The only thing I didn't like is having to wash the extra nipple and sometimes it collapses. Around 4 months LO started getting frustrated with them and we switched to tommy tippee-they are really fast even at the 1st stage nipple so we had to gradually use them til he got the hang of it. I really like TT bottles and they're easy for him to hold :)

  • I hated the breastflow bottles. DS liked them just fine, but he'll take anything. He has such strong suction that he collapsed the nipples big time. The flow was too fast for him and it was creating latch issues for us when we would switch back to the breast. We really love the Dr. Browns bottles.

This.  I only used these with DS & never had any problems.  I never had any of the nipple warping/breaking issues that other ladies have.

  • Its the best one I've tried so far, in terms of no confusion from breast to bottle, and flow. I tried TT and Medela on their slow flow nipples and DS finished his bottles in under a minute, even with taking them out of his mouth to get rid of air bubbles. He has a strong suck, so he collapses the nipples on any bottle he gets. :(

  • We had the breastflow and I didn't like them - too many parts and the inner nipple died in the dishwasher.

I started just using the medela bottles, but with the cheap gerber nipples (those bottles fit the pump too.)  I like the gerber nipples because they are little sturdier than the others and don't collapse.  We are still able to use the slow flow nipples, while the other slow flow brands started collapsing while he ate.

I agree on not buying too many of one kind before you try them out.
