High-Risk Pregnancy

Describe what your bed rest looks like?

I'm on bed rest w/ my 2nd pg -My doctor has told me I need to remain in a sitting or lying position with bathroom/shower privileges. I have a shortened cervix and a 1/2 a uterus which is causing preterm labor. On meds to stop contractions and the doctors are confident that they will be able to keep my LO in until at least 32 wks and likely longer, but of course there is no guarentee.

What have your doctors said about car rides? What does your bed rest look like? Just curious how everyone else is staying sane.

Thanks

Re: Describe what your bed rest looks like?

  • I am on modified bed rest due to low fluid and cholestasis.  They told me to lay on my left side as much as possible.  I can get up to pee, shower, drive to my appts and I have been eating at the table.

I have been trying to entertain my 2 1/2 year old with games.  Also playing on the computer a lot and doing logic puzzles.  I will keep my fingers crossed for you that all goes well with your pregnancy.

  • I am still on strict since 20weeks. Lay on side, go to restroom/shower/ kitchen for a quick meal to eat in bed. I have a cerclage with due to short cervix.

Only time out is for Dr visits. I am almost 33 weeks now and was told come 36 when the stitch is removed I MAY be able to have some more activity. I cheated a bit after the last two Dr appts and grabbed a quick meal. One being because it was my birthday. So far so good and they don't seem as concerned now that I am at this point but still want me down partly because of my higher BP too...

  • I'm on bed rest due to PTL at 28 weeks.  My bed rest consists of laying down at all times.  My OB won't even let me sit in a chair.  She said my head needs to be at a 30 degree angle or less.  She also said that sitting in a chair was just like standing up - that it causes the same pressure on your cervix that standing does.  I can get up to use the rest room and shower.  I tend to take long baths, because it gives me an excuse to get out of bed and I figure I'm lying down anyway.  :)

ETA:  the only car rides I go on are the ones to the dr once a week.

  • I'm allowed to get up to use the bathroom, shower, eat at the table. My MW said I can do things like fold laundry if I'm sitting and somebody brings it to me. She also said I'm allowed to go out to eat on occasion if I promise to come straight home and lay down. As far as driving, she never said I couldn't, but I don't because I can't go anywhere or do anything anyways and MH takes me to my appointments. I have been spending my days reading, watching TV and playing games online. Pretty boring.

  • I'm on what my doctor calls 1/2 day bed rest.  Up for 1 hour in AM to eat and shower, back to bed till lunch.  Eat, back to bed.  Allowed to get up mid-afternoon to pick kids up from bus stop (which I drive to) and back home.  Mostly lay on the couch and try to lay low until after dinner, then back to bed.  I try to do the quieter activities with kids like reading before bed, homework, arts and crafts, etc but it is challenging balancing bed rest with children.
  • I've been on bed rest since 19 weeks with an emergency cerclage. I was told I can sit up for most meals and can even go out to eat once a week. I drove once and didn't find it very pleasant so I get rides to all my appointments. I go out about once or twice a week for dinner or just a drive to get out/air/ice cream :) As things progress and the baby gains more weight, I'm trying to be more strict about things. My doctor actually said as time goes on he could ease things more for me...but I feel it's the opposite and want to be more strict on myself. I try to lay on the couch throughout most of the day. The hardest part for me is weekends when my husband is home and I want to do things around the house with him, be with him various rooms, etc. I find I do a lot more on the weekends...

Best of luck to you! Just listen to your body...I definitely know when I've gone too far or just need to lie down!

I was in the hospital, so it was pretty strict. most days I had bathroom privileges and could shower once a day, but there were some days I couldn't get out of bed at all. I was allowed to ride in the wheelchair once/week for my MFM appts, but that was the only time I was upright and out of my room.

  • I'm on hospital BR so pretty strict. From 23-25 weeks I used a bed pan & often had legs elevated, but then started utilizing bathroom & shower privileges when I felt I was out of the really scary period. I try to time showers even now & stay under 15 minutes tops. I've just been given WC privileges for 20 min/day which has helped my sanity tremendously! I've also written thank you notes, online shopped, learned to crochet hats for babies here in the NICU & slept A LOT. My doctor told me early on to learn something to do with my hands like knit/crochet/scrapbook & make things for our babies & it's really helped me a lot. It's tough will soon be a distant memory when our babies are here! Good luck girl!
