Anyone not taking a childbirth class?

I'm torn!  The hospital I will be delivering at will not be holding a childbirth class, they have instead an online version that you go on and read.  After you finish the online portion you can go for a 90 min class at the hospital where they will answer any questions and give some more info.  The online class is $40, I'm not sure it's worth it.  What would you do?

  • I would take the class.

  • Online birthing class? That sounds a bit scary to me... Can you take a class at another hospital or maybe a birthing center somewhere. Hands on prep just seems best for this, but if you feel comfortable enough not to take a class, I'm sure that would be okay too... just make sure to read up on everything and ask your OB all the questions you can think of.

That's what I was thinking...I'm going to see if there's another facility in my area that I can take a class at, but I have a feeling that they won't be real receptive of me since I'm going to the other hospital.  There aren't any birthing centers around my area either.

  • Take the class!!  My SIL just gave birth a few weeks ago and didn't take it and really regretted it.  There were so many things that she just didn't know about.  Also, when we were all sitting there waiting for her to give birth all the other mothers that were waiting with us said that the birthing class was the best thing they didn't and didn't understand why my SIL didn't take the class.

  • Wouldn't any information be better than having none?   I personally would prefer to have some knowledge of where to go, what is going to happen, about the rooms, their policies, etc, rather than going in blind (regardless of the means of communication)

If you don't have any other option, I don't see how at least watching the online class could hurt?

  • I've had 2 kids and never taken a class. I figured the less time I have to think about delivering a baby the better.  We did a hospital tour so I knew where to go.  My doctor and the L&D nurses did an awesome job of coaching me through the breathing and pushing.  It's up to you - if you really want to take one, go for it.  But I didn't think it was necessary.
  • Im not taking the class but thats cause this is my second. I took it for my first and didnt find it helpful to me, I just finished my labor and delivery rotation at the time in nursing school and felt it was everything I just went through so for me the classes were a waste of time...however I would suggest everyone else to do them who never have gone through them

  • My OB actually didn't recommend taking the classes unless I really had a personal desire to. She said that a hospital tour is valuable, and then to take an infant care and infant CPR class. I was leaning towards not taking one anyway, so I'm glad that was her opinion.

I agree with this. I am on my 2nd but didn't take one with the first. I found that I didn't need it. The nurse was great and she and the dr talked me through everything they were doing right before and as it was being done.  I never missed not taking the class. I guess I didn't feel like I really needed one and most people that had taken them had told me that they didn't really help them with labor and delivery and the nurses talked them through it.

FWIW, you can never be fully prepared to have a baby. You will never be fully prepared for what goes on when you give birth as many things can happen and change almost on a dime. If you think you'd like to know the basics of what will go on, then take the class. But I think to pay $40 for it is crazy.

This is us. We decided, for now, not to take a birthing class. We do have our tour and all that good stuff this weekend so we will be able to ask any questions about the hospital then.

  • The online class is a book that I have to read online.  The link would be available to me for 90 days.  It's not specific to the location I'll be delivering at.  I pretty much have my birth plan figured out with my doctor.  The only reason I'm hesitant is because I'm not sure the book is going to give me all the info I need....like policies, and info about the actual hospital I'm going to.  The 90 min class after I finish the reading would be very helpful, but you can only utilize that if you do the reading.

  • I didn't take one with my first and don't plan to with this one either.  Delivery went fine for me.  The nurses will tell you what you need to be doing.  And like pp have said you can't really prepare for what is going to happen.  But I don't think it would hurt anything either if you do take one.  I am sure they have some good information.

  • I am not taking a childbirth class. I think it's pretty natural...? I've taught health before, and have done a lot of outside research, I know what I would like to do and the types of interventions I'm against unless it is absolutely medically necessary... My husband is an EMT so he's seen deliveries and is trained how to deliver and he done some outside research also... I personally really can't see spending $75 on this... I am taking a 'nuture your newborn class' where we will learn baby care basics and a little about breastfeeding... I spoke with the my MW and she recommended this over any of the other classes offered by our hospital. We will also do the hospital tour...

my hospital offers a birthing class for $80 per couple.  I am still not sure if I want to take it.  I ahve had so many close friends that have had babies recently, I think I can learn alot from talking to them.  I do however want to take the breastfeeding class and the hospital tour.

  • to be honest everything they told me at the birthing class went out the door when I was in labor...you are so excited and nervous and so much going on at the time....the staff at the hospital is great at walking you through how to push and all that good stuff.

But if you feel the classes would help than by all means go for it...for me I thought it was a waste of time, but everyone is different

  • Thanks ladies for your opinions!  I don't think I'm going to do the online class, to me that just seems ridiculous.

  • My cousin is one of the nurses that delivers babies, and she mentioned to us that the classes are a waste of money. I feel confident not taking a class because I can call her and ask questions, not to mention she works at the hospital we are delivering at.

That being said, if I did not have her to guide me through this, I probably would take a class just to ease my worries if for nothing else. I don't think I would choose an online course, because I feel like you could get the same experience online or from a book. I would try to find a "live" class.
