What I DIDN'T know about pregnancy!

Have we had a post like this?? I can't remember. Anyway, I thought this would make for some good Tuesday fun. Things you didn't know about pregnancy!

* We all know that having a newborn means no sleep for the parents. I always thought I'd have 9 months to get all the sleep I will need before the baby comes. No one told me that the sleep loss starts during pregnancy!! I can't remember the last time I had a FULL night of sleep without waking up constantly to pee!

* I never knew I'd still have to use panty liners, and have to use them much more than I ever did before! I have to use a panty liner 24/7 now and have been for at least 2 1/2 months!

I will try to add more later as they come to me. =P

Re: What I DIDN'T know about pregnancy!

  • I didn't know that my nipples would get huge and turn brown. Sorry for TMI. I also didn't know about the mesh panties and mattress sized maxi pads after you give birth.

  • I didn't know I would get all swollen "down there" before the baby came- I just assumed I would look and feel normal until the birth.

  • The nosebleeds have been my biggest surprise. Had no idea about that!

  • * All the freaking digestive problems that come with pregnancy!  I knew that the constipation might come late in the pregnancy because the baby could be sitting on your bowels, but I had no idea I would be struggling with it from day one.

    * All the insane dreams.  I've always been prone to weird dreams, but this is just crazy.  Also been dealing with this since day one.

  • I had no idea how sore my pelvic region would become.  I also didn't know that you could start feeling Braxton Hicks at the halfway point!

  • **Did not know that I would be swollen.. down there.. yikes!

**Did not believe that gas (tmi?) was really uncontrolable.. double yikes!

**Did not realize breathing would be as hard as it is.

**Did not know about food aversions.. just thought there would be cravings - also did not know how severe the cravings could be!

    i'm sure there's more..

  • **I had no idea of the dreams that I would have - crazy!

**I also had no idea that a catheter would be required with an epidural.  For some reason, I just thought you got a shot in your back and you were free to do whatever you like, pain free!

**I had no idea that I needed to get my blood drawn so much!  I also had never heard of anyone talk of the GD test and the drink that came with it.

**Like PP said, I had no idea that my nipples would grow so large and become so dark.

    •  also didnt know about all of the pelvic pain.... bleh
    • Didnt know about the possibility of POOPING on the table during birth
    • Didnt know about peeing my pants when I jump/sneeze/laugh
    • Didnt know about dangers of eating lunch meat - which although i dont really think is a big deal  I had never heard of it prior to becoming pregnant
  • Everything everyone else said, plus....

    - I didn't know about the painful bloating and cramping that can happen during the first few weeks.  Very scarey, very uncomfortable.

    - HOLY DISCHARGE!!  That was a surprise.

    - That I'd eventually have to start wiping after going to the bathroom standing up because of pregnancy induced t-rex arms.

    - I thought I new what tired was, boy was I wrong!!!

    - Joint pain, everwhere, my newest symptom.  I feel like an 88 year old! hahahahahah

    - The joy and excitement that started with seeing that 2nd pink line appear on a pregnancy test.

  • I knew my mood would be altered but I didn't realize I would look at things so differently because I have this little person who depends on me, and in turn what happens that affects my mood in ways I never thought possible.

I didn't realize that I would move from Senator of Stressville to President of Stressville while pregnant!!!

  • Haha Oh yes, the pee while cough/sneezing incidents! Gotta love them.

I also didn't know that about the catheter/epidural, YIKES!

I didn't know I would have to explain to complete strangers that I was not, in fact, having twins. Nor am I due any second now and that June is really NOT that far away.

I didn't realize how hard it would be to do normal activities. Like, oh you know, getting up off the couch or bending over to put on socks!

this as well!  ugghh...can't wait until I can breathe normally again!

  • there wasn't much...so many of my friends got pregnant and gave birth in the time we were ttc that I heard all kinds of crazy things.

I guess the thing that sort of caught me off guard was having orgasms in my sleep (this was mostly in the 1st tri)!!!  The irony is I had little to no desire for sex while awake lol

  • it may sound niave but I didn't know there were SO many complications that could arise (expecially being young and healthy), how common bed rest actually it...and that it would happen to me :/ I was really looking forward to being pregnant. Pssssh. Riggght.
  • * I didnt know that I would wake up every morning feeling like I did a super hard workout the day before.

*I didn't know that my pelvic bone would feel like someone attacked it with a baseball bat.

  • I didn't realize:

     1. That babies got hiccups so much while in your belly. 2. That bending over would be something I would miss so much. 3. That my naturally curly hair wouldn't go curly anymore, lol. 4. How many opinions my family and friends would push on you without asking for them. 5. Constant sex dreams (WHEN I can sleep, lol). 6. HOW HARD IT WOULD BE TO SHAVE "DOWN THERE." 7. How much you could truly love a person who's not even here yet. <3

  • *I didn't know that I would start waddling so early.
    *Discharge...
*Un-controllable bladder (I peed myself once or twice... TMI)
*So much research/information on childbirth and learning about how childbirth is handled in the United states and other countries (Wish I was in college because I would LOVE to write a paper on it. very interesting stuff)
*How many people receive inductions... and epidurals...

    Big One

*I didn't know what SPD/Pubic pain was or even knew that pregnancy can make some women disabled near the end of pregnancy... never did I image this... being in a wheelchair and using a walker (Like a grandma! I look and feel pathetic!)

  • *The family drama it would create.

*How everyone else has the right opinion and tells you how wrong you are for feeling the way you do

Edit: My favorite: How much everyone else makes the pregnancy about them, when they have nothing to do with. ie. others outside of DH and I referring to baby as My, Our, Ours, etc

    This exactly!

This is technically my third pregnancy (second to ever get past 16 weeks) and my vision has totally been affected this time only. I actually squint and have to wear prescription glasses sometimes because I can't see clearly. Weird! I wonder if vision goes back to normal after pregnancy?

  • I didn't realize how hard it would be to get comfortable, or rather, how uncomfortable things are now that used to be fine. Example: Sitting on the couch, sitting upright in bed, sitting on the floor... pretty much just sitting in general. Nothing is comfortable.

That as you get towards the end simple tasks like putting on socks, getting off the couch, rolling over in bed, and peeing in a cup at the doctors office involve so much work and effort.

Lol, I cant roll over in bed without grunting! and I the urine sample at my Doctors on Monday was nearly impossible! I don't know how they expect me to be able to do that for another 8 weeks!

I had no idea how loose my hips would be, or how hard it is to put pants, shoes, socks on.

Or how weird the inside of my belly button was.

  • I had no idea how difficult it would be to get comfortable while sleeping or get a good night's rest in 3rd tri.

I had no idea how emotional I would be.

Constipation and gas were the other 2 biggest surprises.  I won't miss that.

I also didn't realize how cool it would be to feel my baby moving inside of me.  I WILL miss that............ a LOT.

    Me too... so obnoxious!

Also I didn't know I would fall asleep at 6:30 when I got home during the first trimester.

I had heard but didn't really realize how hard it would be to bend over (at least the last week or so)....

I didn't know I would get tired walking up the stairs during the last couple months.

  • That the pressue of baby in my lower half would make it uncomfortable to sit - I anticipated growing pains, and pressure during L&D, but not pressure for weeks on end after 20 weeks!

  • I come from a family of TONS of women...lots who have bore many children ...I feel/felt like I knew almost everything you ladies mentioned...and even the docs and the books mentioned UNTIL we started talking placenta.

How big it is! How gross it looks on the videos! How it is actually "delivered" and how your body bleeds for an unknown amt of time in the healing process!

    I had no idea!

    AGREED!!!! Yes

Oh, I also didn't know about delivering placenta!! I still don't know how big it is or what it looks like. I don't want to know the details. Or the details on delivering it. I'm just going to find all that out when I get to that point. haha!

It SHOULD. go back to normal. The vision changes are usually caused by exceess fluid, which is a direct side effect of pregnancy. Once your fluid levels drop, pressure in your eyes will go back to normal, and you should be seeing just as well as you did before.

    For my "didn't know"

    - That the "crazy pregnant lady" emotions you see on TV are NOT exaggerated. I seriously almost cried in walmart today because they're already out of discount easter chocolate.

    - That ALL my joints would loosen, and swell, and that I would need prescription painkillers to manage it.

I didn't know I could be so in love with someone before I ever met them.

    This one is good!!

I know this is really dumb but I never really understood the grief of miscarriage. I mean the Mom never really knew the baby right? Wow, how that perspective changed. I feel bad for ever even thinking that way..I cannot even explain how much I love my baby now.

  • My vision has been bad since about 20 weeks. I cannot even see the guide on the TV anymore. I'm not convinced it's pregnancy but if it is, wow! I'm still hoping it comes back.

OMG yes this! I literally LOL when I read this :)

I also didn't know that after sex I would have to actually walk bow legged due to swelling and discomfort. I was tempted to shove an icepack in my underwear!!
