They work more independently on their work. In our second grade they start learning cursive writing in the second semester. A little more homework each night. More tests.
Ditto OP minus the emphasis on cursive writing. Also, in my kids' school district, they are grouped more homogeneously for reading and for math than they were in K and 1st. Students might change rooms for math or reading group in 2nd, but this is not done in K and 1st. There are more tests and quizzes in 2nd grade, and less time is spent in "workstations" or "centers" during the school day. My DD had slightly more homework, including some long term projects, but the homework was still fun. 2nd grade was my DD's favorite grade out of K, 1, 2, and 3.
Also, you might want to be aware (but not share with your DD) that the social landscape changes during 2nd grade. My sister teaches elementary art, and she often remarks on this. In K and 1st, kids are so focused on themselves that they don't pay much attention to who's "cool" and who's not. A 6 or 7 year old may have a best friend, but they'll pretty much play with whoever is nearby. By the end of grade 2, kids have grown comfortable enough with being on their own in school that they begin divide into little groups and cliques. They become much more aware of where everyone stands in the social hierarchy. This can lead to some friction and possible bullying.

this, especially in the Spring. It has become a very present part of DD's life. Cliques and such.
Ok, 2nd grade is sounding a lot like our 1st grade. Interesting, both the good and bad stuff included. We're in a private school, so I guess that might have something to do with it. We already change classes for science, social studies and reading groups are split between different teachers. We have spelling tests and some random quiz once a week already. They've already started forming their little groups, but I swear that started back when they were 4. These kids have been together for 3 years now. We keep telling them to be nice, because they're stuck with each other until 8th grade.
