Any tips for me? I am going to be away from DH for a few days and will have to self inject. I tried in the thigh last night because I think it is hard to do my hip, but my leg is so sore this morning.
For those of you that do them yourself, do you do hip or thigh? If hip, what is your technique?
I know this has been asked before, but I never paid attention to the answers because I thought that I will NEVER do those myself. ![]()
Re: Self Injecting PIO
I did mine in the hip, because there was more fat to pinch there :P
I just twisted around as far as I could, made the skin taught, and stabbed as fast as I could, haha! I had to always use my right hand for injecting though so I found this easier to do on my right hip. I had some serious brusing on the left.
I know some people swear by icing, but I found that to be too time-consuming. Afterward, I would kneed the area to spread the oil around the tissue so I didn't get a really big knot.
GL! You can do it!
I would do it in my upper hip - over to the side more than towards the middle of my body. I would lay down on the opposite side to do it. Use the arm/hand you are laying on to pinch the skin, and then the other hand to do the injection. If you are right handed, try that side first.
I thought it was going to be horrible, but after doing it myself a few times, I actually preferred doing it myself as opposed to DH doing it. I had less soreness and bruising.
Good Luck!
Exactly this....i went back to alternating, when DH came back home. I did ice for about 10 min before, and never felt anything. I was fine after the injection...no ice or heat needed.
GL!!
Since either DH or I were out of town for work for my first IVF, I did all my own shots, including PIO. I was told to give the shot in the butt. I iced the area for a couple minutes first, twisted to do the shot, and massaged afterwards. I'm not very limber, but I didn't think twisting to do it myself was very difficult. I alternated left and right sides every other day. Good luck!

Check out the youtube videos, they are very helpful. Use the mirror in the bathroom, you'll be fine! I actually found that I was better doing it myself than having my DH do it. Good luck!
I did all of mine myself since DH is a wuss when it comes to needles/blood/etc. I just hiked my side up on the bathroom counter so I could see in the mirror and I actually inserted the needle very slowly. They said to stab it, but I honestly couldn't muster the strength to do that so I tried it slow. Beyond the initial pinch, I found it wasn't painful at all.
I had trouble drawing back at that angle, so most of the time I just injected it. I did have blood a few times but nothing that didn't stop right away. I'm right-handed and found I always had to do it in my right hip b/c I just didn't have the strength to do it with my other hand/side. I just rotated around to different spots. I didn't ice or heat anything. Good luck! After that first one, it wasn't so bad... just the anxiety of it all is the worst part.
OMG! Thanks to the responses in this thread, tonight I did my own PIO shot for the very first time! I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I didn't even feel a thing! I sat in the bathroom and hoisted myself onto the counter, twisted and pinched some hip/butt fat, and injected!
