Trying to Get Pregnant

Short term disability insurance?

Do any of you have short term disability insurance? Between trying to have a baby and buying a house, I'm thinking it would be smart on my end since I have limited sick days. Any company suggestions or tips for getting effective coverage? Thanks!

Re: Short term disability insurance?

  • I do. I'm not sure about suggestions though, my school district has one company that they go through so I just got it from them. Get it asap though because I think some of them you can't use for 6-10 months after you get it as a waiting period. I believe mine covers 6 weeks for a regular birth and 9 weeks for a c-section and pays 60% of your regular salary.

  • I applied for it to begin this past January. I knew we were going to be TTC and you have to have it before you're pregnant or it's considered a "pre-existing condition" and you can't get it. I'm not sure what tips to give you for coverage, but mine will give me $1400 a month up to 3 months which is what I planned on taking for ML anyway. HTH :)

  • We have it through DH's company - it's with Colonial Life. I think Aflac and other insurance companies offer this insurance as well. We also have Hospital Bridge coverage in addition, which pays out if you go to the hospital for any reason. It's pretty cheap, but will be well worth it.

This sounds really similar to mine.  I've always had it, even before TTC because I am paranoid about not being able to work due to something unforseen and missing paychecks.  I don't know about waiting periods, I think someone here told me once that if your company offers paid mat leave, THAT has a waiting period (like you have to be with the company x amount of months before you are eligible)...but it seems like if you are paying for STD, you should be eligible as soon as you start paying for it.

The way I look at it, it certainly can't hurt to get it now, good luck!

This could be definitely true, I feel like I remember talking to a friend of mine in HR at another company and she mentioned something about a waiting period, but I could be completely wrong. I signed up for my STD last year because I knew we were going to probably TTC in the future, so I didn't really pay attention to anything but how much it paid!

I've done A LOT of research on this matter. Pregnancy is considered a preexisting condition so you MUST have the STD insurance prior to becoming pregnant for it to take affect. The price can vary considerably from policy to policy. The Aflac plan is supposed to be very good, but it only available to those school districts/ companies who already use Aflac as their insurance provider. GL!

I am really curious about this as well.  I don't have the additional insurance and know nothing about it.  This is coverage in addition to the company maternity leave?  I only get 6 weeks through my company so this additional insurance (Aflac maybe?) would cover an additional 6 weeks at 60%?  I am unsure if my company offers this supplemental insurance.  Can you get it as an individual if your company doesn't offer it?

Yes, but only through certain providers and, again, you must enroll prior to becoming pregnant.

  • I have it through my work. Not sure of the company it's from though, but its only $1 and some change out of each paycheck, so I've always had it.

  • I have a individual policy through The Standard.  I purchased it many years ago when I was at my old job and it's very affordable.  I'm fairly certain one can sign up and purchase a policy with them on their website.

  • I opted to sign up for my companies Short Term Disability insurance when I started working with them. I had to wait 3 months for my benefits to kick in but now didn't have a waiting period after that time frame. However they did mention that if I were to get pregnant before the STD kicked in, they would not pay for it as it would be a "pre-exsisting condition". However it's now effective and we haven't gotten our BFP yet so we will be covered. It cost me $30 a month and will pay $1400.00 a month for up to 3 months for ML.

  • I'd also be interested if people could post companies they purchased from with no employer affiliation. My employer provides me with 60% of my pay for 5-8 weeks depending on the type of birth.. and I'm hoping to get a bit more by purchasing an individual plan. All the companies I found would offer through an employer or special group - not individually.

It will only cover the period you are disabled, which would generally be 6-8 weeks, depending how you deliver. So it would pay whatever portion of your salary your company doesn't pay. At least, I''m pretty sure that's how it works. I doubt you could use it to just tack on extra time off after your disability period.

I've heard a lot of people that have Aflac say you have to have it a year before you can use it.

  • Shayliz - any of the plans that I've found have to be through my employer (they take the monthly fee directly out of my paycheck through my company).

Follow-up question: I'm on CD6. Not technically pregnant. But if I get a BFP, it has the retroactive 2 weeks when talking about how far along you are. So if I sign up for it tomorrow, find out that I'm pregnant in three weeks, is it considered pre-existing? I plan on asking the insurance guy as soon as I get a meeting with him (my boss is dragging her feet setting this up. it's driving me up a wall), but I figured I'd ask here in case anyone knew. Thanks!

  • My STD is through Prudential. The rep I spoke with said that they look back 3 months. I signed up 2 weeks ago, making my effective date June 1. She said that anything that shows up in my medical records for March, April or May would be considered pre-existing. This could vary from company to company.

I believe my school district's is very much like this.
