When did you move LO to a bed?

Lily has always been a great sleeper in her crib. Lately, she is waking during the night crying and then goes back to sleep. She moves around a lot and I think she may be hitting her head on the crib slats. Would moving her to a twin bed help or is she too young? I think if we changed her to the toddler bed that her bed converts to, it wouldnt make much of a difference b/c it would still have the slats on it. When did you move your child and any advice/tips? TIA!

  • We still haven't moved DD from the crib.  We do go through short lived periods where she does what you describe with the waking, but I think it is just phases they go through, honestly.  I am all for confinement unless they climb out more than once.  So, we still have no plans to rock that boat until we absolutely have to.

  • We moved DD into a twin bed at 20 months. The first three days were a tough adjustment (particularly for nap time more so than for nighttime) but she's been great after that.

  • When DS was hitting his head, we put his crib bumper back in.  With that said, we moved him at 16mths to a twin mattress on the floor and then when her was 26mths he got a twin bed (moved into our new house and his own room).  We do not have a crib that transitions and we needed the crib for DD so that is why we did that.  DD is almost 19mths and is a climber (caught her trying to climb out once about a week ago) and then we could not pass up the opportunity for a toddler bed and bedding set ($40) this weekend so we moved her.  DS we had a rough night the first night and he was good after that.  DD has been easy so far (just started today).
Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!

  • We moved Hudson to a toddler bed around 18 months, and then to a twin right before his second birthday. He wasn't a climber or particularly uncomfortable but baby number 2 was on her way so we thought we'd give it a try to avoid having to buy a second crib. He did great.
  • At 23 mos when he decided to climb out multiple times.  It was a rough transition for us... I attribute that to the fact he really doesn't talk well and dropped his nap all at the same time.

  • We just transitioned DD to her full size bed about a week ago.  She started sleeping very poorly in her crib a few months ago.  So we changed it to a toddler bed which really just meant taking the front of the crib off.  It helped a little but she still wouldn't fall asleep in it at night (she had to lay in our bed and then we would put her in her bed once asleep) and more often than not, would wake up in the middle of the night, demanding to sleep with us.  So we decided to go ahead and convert it to the bed.  She's done well with it and is once again, falling asleep in her own bed and sleeping through the night.  I'm really, really hoping it stays that way.  I was pretty nervous at first...her bed seems so tall and massive!  But we put a rail up so I feel like she's safe.  And she's so excited to have her very own "big girl bed" so that has helped.

  • We moved DD right at 2 yo.

We probably would have waited, but it was right when we were moving into our new hosue, plus the family that loaned us the crib needed it back. Good timing, so we went ahead and got her toddler bed.

At my parents' house, where she stays a lot, she still sleeps in her crib.

I'm trying to remember from when DD was Lily's age, and I think there was a phase when she started to move around more where she would wake up, then fall back asleep several times thru the night. I would probably wait it out. At least a while longer.

  • We switched Cedric at 16 months and he loves his big boy bed!  Good luck.
