Thinking of only transferring one embryo... Thoughts?

So if we go through with ivf(we meet with dr today) I am thinking of only transferring one. Does that sound crazy? To go through all of this and only transfer one? Does anyone know the difference in success rates between transferring one versus two?

Re: Thinking of only transferring one embryo... Thoughts?

  • I don't know much about your TTC history, how long have you been trying?  How old are you?  What is your diagnosis?

I don't have THE #, but I know transferring 2 would increase your success slightly.

Also, you, your DH and your RE all need to agree on how many to transfer based on the quality and development of the embryos.

  • The number you transfer should be agreed upon with your RE once you are aware of the quality of the embryos.

I went in to my 1st IVF cycle saying we were only going to transfer 2. We ended up transferring 3. I was worried about triplets, but I didn't even get 1 baby.

Here are 2 things I found.  There are more things online about eSETs in Europe...it seems like that is their preference there.  You def need to talk to Dr. L today and get his recommendation since you don't really have a huge history to look at to have that help you decide.  I also think if you get to a blast, that would make a huge difference as well in your decision.  You have to be 100% comfortable with twins if you transfer two.

  • I lost my IVF twins to preterm labor at 19w2d .  My only risk factor was the multiple gestation.  I'm doing a SET for my upcoming IVF and wish I would have done it for my first cycle as I would most likely still be pregnant.

For what it's worth, I got 5 eggs and all 5 turned to high-quality blasts.

  • If you have a strong, healthy blast, I don't think it's crazy to transfer 1 at all.  If you're not 100% okay with having multiples then you would be crazy to transfer more than 1 (IMO).

    Good Luck!!

After it was all said and done, I only had one egg even fertilize, so the decision was made for me and my doc - it was only going to be one.  But it took!  Best of luck to you!

    Another ticker warning.....

I really felt strongly about an eSET and told my RE prior to second IVF if we had good quality I wanted to go with one.  My RE's stats show about the same pregnancy rate with one vs multiples so I would definitely ask at your practice.

You may have noticed my twins ticker...we did transfer one but got identicals - even doubly glad we didn't transfer two!

    This exactly!

I start stims tomorrow for IVF #1 and if we have a strong, healthy blast we are only going to transfer 1. MH and I are both 30 with unexplained IF and my RE actually recommended this for us. I'm not opposed to healthy twins of course, but 1 healthy baby is really our goal.

  • I got pregnant transferring one, and it's all I'll be allowed to transfer when we go again.   It only takes 1!  GL
  • I absolutely do not think that you are crazy if you only want to transfer 1 then you know what is best for you. I think i is a very personal decision and if you have a great blast, like everyone says it only takes one.

I had my ET yesterday and I transfered 2 "big beautiful blasts" as my doctor put it. I am nervous about the thought of multiples but  for me being OOP i know that I would love more than 1 child (if I am blessed) and for $17,000 give me 2 for the price of 1 please.

But just like me everyone knows what is best for them and transferring 1 sounds perfect!
