need a vacuum cleaner rec

How lame is it that we're thinking about buying a new vacuum with some of our tax refund?  Ever since I helped a friend clean out her car with ours, it smells a little bit like wet dog every time I use it - even though I've changed both filters and cleaned the heck out of it.

Anyway, do you have a vacuum you love?  Tell me about it!

p.s. We have carpet in our house, no hardwood floors. Sad

  • We bought the Dyson Animal with wedding money, after we got married.  It's an awesome vaccuum, esp for pet hair!  We got lots of recs from the Knot and Nest before we bought it.  It's a little on the pricey side.  We used a 20% off coupon from BBB.

  • We also have a Dyson Animal. And we love it.
  • We have the Dyson DC25 animal vacuum and love it. I bought it off Amazon back in December for $389. We have mostly carpet in our apartment and it picks up the cat hair like nobodies business. Definitely recommend it.

  • Well, we bought one with part of our tax refund last year, so not too lame, I'd say. Big Smile We bought the entry-level Dyson, I can't remember the model number now but was significantly cheaper than the Animal. So far we've loved it.

  • Another Dyson Animal person here.  A-Mazing Vacuum.  Worth every single penny we spent on it 3 years ago.  We have dogs, and it gets a lot of hair that other vacuums didn't.  Plus it's easy to empty and clean.  I think in our last vacuum which was a hoover the belt broke 3 times, I passed it on to my parents and it's broke on them too.  It can't handle all the hair our dogs put out.  But the Dyson CAN!

  • we have the dyson animal too....LOVE it! They have them at Costco pretty frequently too!
  • Thanks everyone!  I'd love a Dyson, but my H wasn't so sure after reading some of the negative reviews on Amazon about poor CS from Dyson and some flimsy parts.  This boosts my confidence in it.

Oh, and we don't have a pet (yet), but we might someday if we move into a house with more yard.

  • Another Dyson lover here.  I didn?t get the animal because apparently the only difference was the attachments.  5 years later and it still amazes me every time I use it.  If it broke I?d buy another one in a heartbeat. And I have all hardwood.

I know nothing of their customer service. I?ve never had to use it. In 5 years.

  • Another Dyson Animal. Kohls often offers 30% off sales and they do not exclude the Dyson brand in this sale, at the same time they usually offer $10.00 in Kohls cash for every $50.00 you spend. I think when we got ours it was $399.00 -30% (119.70) = $279.00 and then we got $50.00 in Kohls cash, essentially it was like paying $$229.00 plus tax, a great deal.

  • I'm another member of the Dyson Animal fan club too.  With 7 pets it gets a workout and has always been great.

  • To be different, I really like my Kenmore Progressive canister (I have one of the middle models). But if you have all carpet though, a canister is probably not for you. It does work well on carpet, but I like it most for its multi-surface vacuuming abilities and its hand held powered turbo tool for use on my furniture.

My vacuum smelled a little bit like a doggie when I got it (used), and I had it serviced by a vacuum guy. It smelled much better afterward. Just a thought.
