NBR: Italy on Wed!

Hey ladies!  You are so helpful when it comes to bump stuff, so I thought I would throw something else into the mix.  I am heading to Italy this week (yeah!), and would love suggestions of what not to miss if you have been there - will be in Milan, Bologna, Florence and Rome!

 Grazie! (gotta practice Smile)

Re: NBR: Italy on Wed!

  • How long are you going for?  We were there 2 years ago.  We drove from Venice to Rome and had a blast!  Rome itself will keep you quite occupied, there is so much to see and do there!  I'd definitely go to the Vatican museum, the Sistine chapel is a must see. Really, aside from the all the common sites, we had a blast just wandering the streets and drinking some of the best coffee we've ever had.

Have a fun trip, Italy is one of our favorite places!

  • This is a great time of year to go! You should be there right before the summer crowds!!!

Milan - if you want to see the painting of the last supper you have to make a reservation. We never got to do that because we never made reservations in time.

Florence - Florence is my favorite. There is SO much to do!

You have to check out the Duomo. I would say walk up the 416 stairs to the top of the Duomo tower, but obviously only if you think your body is up to it, given your condition :)

If you want any steak while you're there, Florence is the place to get it. There is a little restaurant over by the San Lorenzo market that is to die for and has the best bisteca fiorentino (florentine steak) you will ever eat in your entire life.  Of course now i can't remember the name of the restaurant, but I googled and I'm pretty sure this is it: Fiaschetteria-Trattoria Mario.

San Lorenzo market is where you will buy all sorts of souvineirs from scarves to leather purses to journals. Remember, you can probably talk them down on cost though! negotiate, negotiate, negotiate!!

I LOVED the Boboli gardens. They are huge, and beautiful and romantic... I went several times while I was studying in Italy and just spent the day walking around and relexing. It's so peaceful.

You of course can see the statue of David (Accademia museum - get there first thing in the morning or you will have to wait in line), buy gold on the ponte vecchio bridge, stroll through the HUGE uffizi museum... etc.

Rome - if you are oging to do the vatican museum, do it first thing in the day. I recommend a guided tour or getting the little headsets that tell you what you're looking at. It is huge and will take hours, or I think there is an option to just see the Sistine Chapel (which is a ton smaller than it looks!)

If you are catholic, or just up for it, the pope comes every wednesday I think, I can't remember what time, but you could always go get blessed by him :)

I would do a guided tour of all the ruins as well. They are everywhere, and it is so awesome to have someone explain to you what you are looking at.

AHH... I need to go back... I am not craving steak!!!!!!!!!

  • LOVE ITALY! We went last September and it was AWESOME! In Rome I would definitely recommend the Vatican museum and I would do a guided tour. By doing that we got to cut line, which was super helpful. I would also go to the Trevi Fountain.

Enjoy yourself! Eat lots of Gelato!

  • We just went to Rome and Tuscany for a trip in September. Like others said in Rome go to the Vatican and get a tour we hired someone from When In Rome tours before we went and it was us and 2 other couples the girl was in her mid 20's and an art student she knew so much! You can also download Rick Steves audio tour for the Pantheon and Colosseum plus some others just search Rick Steves Italy in ITunes. Other then the one scheduled tour we just walked around Rome and soaked everything in and ate (Anthony Bourdain did a No Reservations Rome just before we went so we went to one of those restaurants then I ate a lot of gelato!) I want to go back!! I hope you have a great trip!

  • Thanks for the recs ladies!  I will be sure to have a lot of gelato and pasta with all of you in mind!  Big Smile

  • You're forgetting me too! I was born in Italy but unfortunately I can't give any recommendations since we came back to the States when I was 3. But have an amazing time!!!

  • We were in Italy the end September/October and can't wait to go back! We went to Rome, Pisa, Florence, and Venice. Rome and Venice were our favorites, we didn't care for Florence too much. We backpacked and rode trains to the cities. The best part was being on our own...just the two of us for two weeks....getting lost on purpose just to see different parts of the cities. In Rome, we went to where the locals live...it was great to get away from the big tour groups.
  • So jealous!

My one big suggestion, if you haven't done it already, and are planning on going to see the Last Supper in Milan (which you should because it is awesome) is to get tickets in advance. We got them online when we went and when we got there, saw a lot of people being turned away or having to wait for hours! We just were told the time we could go in and came at that time and went in.

  • There is so much to do in Rome it's a must see for first-timers!  I personally love the south my heritage is from there and the food differs greatly from north to south; Sicily and Capri both are great to visit in the summer.  A word of advice: people there will rob you blind and walk up behind you and cut the strap from your purse right off your shoulder and you won't even feel them steal it so watch your stuff.  Have fun!  Ciao` Bella!

  • Oh, you're so lucky!  It's so beautiful!  I went to Florence and Rome on a cruise in 2009.  In Rome, we hit the Colloseum, the Forum & St. Peter's Basilica.  In Florence, we saw the David and walked around and went to the leaning tower of Pisa.  Enjoy!  Take it all in!
