Hey ladies! You are so helpful when it comes to bump stuff, so I thought I would throw something else into the mix. I am heading to Italy this week (yeah!), and would love suggestions of what not to miss if you have been there - will be in Milan, Bologna, Florence and Rome!
Grazie! (gotta practice )
Re: NBR: Italy on Wed!
How long are you going for? We were there 2 years ago. We drove from Venice to Rome and had a blast! Rome itself will keep you quite occupied, there is so much to see and do there! I'd definitely go to the Vatican museum, the Sistine chapel is a must see. Really, aside from the all the common sites, we had a blast just wandering the streets and drinking some of the best coffee we've ever had.
Have a fun trip, Italy is one of our favorite places!
This is a great time of year to go! You should be there right before the summer crowds!!!
Milan - if you want to see the painting of the last supper you have to make a reservation. We never got to do that because we never made reservations in time.
Florence - Florence is my favorite. There is SO much to do!
You have to check out the Duomo. I would say walk up the 416 stairs to the top of the Duomo tower, but obviously only if you think your body is up to it, given your condition
If you want any steak while you're there, Florence is the place to get it. There is a little restaurant over by the San Lorenzo market that is to die for and has the best bisteca fiorentino (florentine steak) you will ever eat in your entire life. Of course now i can't remember the name of the restaurant, but I googled and I'm pretty sure this is it: Fiaschetteria-Trattoria Mario.
San Lorenzo market is where you will buy all sorts of souvineirs from scarves to leather purses to journals. Remember, you can probably talk them down on cost though! negotiate, negotiate, negotiate!!
I LOVED the Boboli gardens. They are huge, and beautiful and romantic... I went several times while I was studying in Italy and just spent the day walking around and relexing. It's so peaceful.
You of course can see the statue of David (Accademia museum - get there first thing in the morning or you will have to wait in line), buy gold on the ponte vecchio bridge, stroll through the HUGE uffizi museum... etc.
Rome - if you are oging to do the vatican museum, do it first thing in the day. I recommend a guided tour or getting the little headsets that tell you what you're looking at. It is huge and will take hours, or I think there is an option to just see the Sistine Chapel (which is a ton smaller than it looks!)
If you are catholic, or just up for it, the pope comes every wednesday I think, I can't remember what time, but you could always go get blessed by him
I would do a guided tour of all the ruins as well. They are everywhere, and it is so awesome to have someone explain to you what you are looking at.
AHH... I need to go back... I am not craving steak!!!!!!!!!
LOVE ITALY! We went last September and it was AWESOME! In Rome I would definitely recommend the Vatican museum and I would do a guided tour. By doing that we got to cut line, which was super helpful. I would also go to the Trevi Fountain.
Enjoy yourself! Eat lots of Gelato!
So jealous!
My one big suggestion, if you haven't done it already, and are planning on going to see the Last Supper in Milan (which you should because it is awesome) is to get tickets in advance. We got them online when we went and when we got there, saw a lot of people being turned away or having to wait for hours! We just were told the time we could go in and came at that time and went in.
