Spit up/reflux question

LO spits up quite a bit. More than what I would consider normal (think full on vomiting practically). we switched him to a formula that has rice starch in it and it helped some but it is still happening quite a bit. Our pedi didnt seem too concerned since he is continuing to gain weight. If your LO has reflux how did you figure that was what it was. He is almost 3 months. I know they dont recommend rice cereal until 4 months. Would it be to early to try? How much would I start with? LO and ourselves are going through 4-5 outfits a day! We also burp him frequently (after every 1-2 ounces) so thats is not the problem.

Lena is on the added rice too (Enfamil AR). She still spits up a ton, but less than any other formula. Pedi said we could add rice cereal to regular formula, but that we'd have even more constipation issues. Pedi wasn't too concerned about her crazy spit up because she was still gaining weight and she was a "happy spitter". About a week later, she got into these screaming fits when she'd spit up and we started her on Zantac twice a day. It helped the screaming, but she still soaks us and herself multiple times a day.

My nephew also had crazy reflux. My sister suggested just not burping her and trying to keep her as still as possible after feeding and only burping her gently if she fussed. That has made a HUGE difference in how much she spits up.

Have you tried keeping LO straight up after a feeding? This has worked for DS. I also don't burp on my shoulder anymore, I sit him on my lap and just lean him forward a bit. I think the pressure on his tummy made him spit up more.

Glad to know we are not alone!!! We are on Enfamil AR too. Did you get the zantac from her Pedi or did you get it OTC? Its funny he wont start his vomiting/spit up until well after he has eaten. Maybe 10-15 min later when he is sitting up and then it hits.

This is exactly how we burp him. Doesn't seem to help. He usually has his spit up episode 10-15 min after eating and burping. He is in the stage where he wants to sit up and see everything. And while he is sitting up he just starts spitting up and practically vomits over everything.

Are you still using low flow nipples? I have found that the faster he can get the milk the more he spits up, so we've stuck with the lowest flow nipples.

Yep, we are using Dr. Browns bottles and Playtex Vent air with slow flow nipples. I am just at a loss. Iit seems to have gotten worse since he is eating more. I think we are gearing up for the 12 week growth spurt. He is eating 6 oz every 2-3 hours.

DS did the same thing and I had to keep telling my pedi that it was not just a "laundry issue". Spitting up with one thing but continuously acting as if he is vomiting isn't okay so she put him on Zantac which made him constipated so we switched him to Prilosec. She also had us put him on Nutramigen. It took 2 weeks and it went from happening every other feeding every day to maybe twice a week, if that. We don't have to use bibs religiously anymore! (Which, by the sounds of it, you should start doing. It will save your outfits. The ones with plastic backing are the best though so it doesn't soak through)

Also, we knew he had reflux because he was choking on it, gagging, coughing, and he was screaming in pain. He also has silent reflux where it comes back up and he swallows it.

I am looking forward to the day of putting DS on solids.

ETA: We just tried to switch him off Nutramigen and on Good Start but DS totally went backwards and it like a vomit machine again so apparently, for us, the formula is definitely part of it.

The pedi prescribed it for her. We also use slow flow Dr. Brown's bottles- they seem to be the best for her -we've tried drop ins, mam bottles, avent and these work best for us.

We also now laugh at the burp cloths people bought us. We moved on right to using all those receiving blankets!

Hmm...that's tricky then. I know it's rough when they projectile spit up all over the place. Sometimes I think it should be in the baby Olympics or something. Smile

Yep! That is what we are using!

Allysunc- We are using bibs religiously lol he cannot put on an outfit without them. He is soaking through them so we may need to bring out the ones with the plastic backing. I guess we will see what he weighs at his June appointment. I will bring the issue up then and see what she says.

Now that would be fun to watch! Thanks for all the advice/tips. I think we are pretty much doing all we can. I'll talk to his pedi again at his 4 month check up. He seems to be gaining weight just fine so thats good at least.

This is DD exactly except we haven't tried to switch her of the Nutramigen yet. Pedi wants to try that in a month or so. Honestly I am terrified to do it.

I would suggest actually burping him less, it may help. I would not burp until he is done the bottle then just burp gently for no more the 5 minutes and keep upright for 15 mins at least after each feeding. Our LO has silent reflux and this seems to be working better then the zantac. The zantac has made him really sleepy and crying a lot more. Also I was told if the baby has reflux not to use gripe water as it can make it way worse. I don't know about rice cereal or formula cause our LO is still EBF for now but I would imagine it may help if his reflux is really bad.
