I recently met a toddler named Shira and thought it was beautiful. I've never heard it before, which is a bonus in my book. Thought it might be a good suggestion for anyone looking for something a little different, but not too crazy.
It is pronounced Sheeer-uh.
It means 'song' in Hebrew.
Thoughts?
Re: Shira
I think of this
Yep this. Not a fan, all I can her is her battle cry.

Shira is lovely. I don't think She-Ra at all.
Nice Hebrew name.
Edited to add: I like Shiri too. The meaning and religious background make the names appealing to me. Makes sense, as I chose Aaron (and Aharon for his Hebrew name) for my DS--after my grandfather.

Same, and just curious to those that didn't... are you just younger and not so much children of the 80's?
And don't assume our children won't know, my son loves tele-toon retro and they play all the good stuff. My cousin's 3yo daughter was running around an indoor play yelling "I am She-ra!!!" so cute.
Super popular Jewish girls name. And I've always pronounced it Sheer-Ah.
There's also Shirin, which is a Persian take on Shira/Shiri and it's pronounced Sha-rin.
I didn't realize this was a name, but the very first thing I thought of when I saw the title of your post, were the Hebrew lyrics of an amazing song from The Prince of Egypt Soundtrack.
It's the song "When you Believe" (the longer Michelle Pfeiffer/Sally Dworsky version from the actual movie, rather than the Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey version that plays during the credits).
Here are the lyrics. (The meaning of the words are in parentheses.):
"A-shir-a la-do-nai ki ga-oh ga-ah"
(I will sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously)
...
"A-shir-a, a-shir-a, a-shir-a!"
(I will sing, I will sing, I will sing!)
If you haven't heard this song, I highly recommend viewing the scene on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJa4wtxbF58 (The lyrics I'm talking about above start about halfway through the song)
Those lyrics are in Hebrew and that's where the name comes from.
exactly
I know... I already said that.
Ditto. I LOVED She-ra and He-Man. I don't think anyone growing up with your daughter would associate it, though.
I grew up in the 80s too. I don't think of She-Ra because I'm Jewish and it's a familiar Jewish name. So I think of the people I've met with that name, not a cartoon. Same with the name Ariel (or Arielle). I don't think of the mermaid, I think of all the girls I grew up with named that.
