Austin Babies

Did you use your swing and bouncy seat?

I'm just a little confused on how the 2 are different. I know the seat vibrates and some babies like that but is that the only difference? we are in limited space. Just revived my little snugabunny bouncer, hubby was so excited about our first baby gift he put it together right away! my mom told me she is buying us a swing also, so I was just wondering if we needed both??

  • The bouncy seat is nice to have because it's portable. You can put baby in there while you shower...then carry it to the kitchen and put baby in there while you cook dinner...then carry it to another part of the house.

  • yep, used them both. Ditto the others on the portability of the bouncy seat. Plus, for my DD, swing = nap, but bouncy seat never did.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Yes! And the bouncer is still being used to this day, it stays in my bathroom. The swing was a lifesaver too!

  • We used both, but the swing was the winner, hands down. It was often the only thing that would calm DD down and the only way she would sleep well. She slept in that thing 100% of the time for the first 4 months! Oh, and swing STILL = nap for us...the motor just died this weekend and now I have to give it a big push so it will swing for a few minutes while she falls asleep :P

I used them both ALL. THE. TIME. They were worth their weight in gold, as far as I'm concerned.
  • yes we used both a lot.  my son actually prefered the bouncy seat - i love how portable it was.  it was easy to take it into the bathroom so i could shower or get dressed.  and it was easy to take to a friend's house.  he also loved the swing and we used that for about 5 or so months.

    GL!

  • We used both...A LOT.  DS#1 was pretty fussy and had some reflux, so the swing was the only place he'd nap for the first four months or so.  Both kids slept overnight in the bouncy seat for the first month or two as well to help with the spitting up.  If I had to choose I'd pick a bouncy first since it's portable.

  • I have a video of the only time Jack was ever in his swing. He hated it and never used it.

The bouncer...was used daily and was even what he slept in for about 6 weeks when we realized he had reflux and needed to be slept upright.

  • We use the swing a lot, but not the bouncer...although she's still young.  Our swing is a bouncy chair and you just detach it and it's mobile.

  • We didn't have a bouncy, just a swing, which we all got addicted to pretty quickly.  BUT, we do have the FP Rock n Play sleeper, and its portable and rocks.  We still put her in it to sleep at night when she is congested, which is always because she's a daycare kid.
  • We're the special snowflake...DD hated both. I gave our bouncy seat away, and the swing was part of a FP bundle, so it's stored.
  • ... and off to order a bouncy seat since we didn't get either item yet!
  • thanks for all your advice! I guess I will keep both and try them out.

  • you could always get a combo if you are short on space - that is what we did. the swing seat removes and becomes a bounce - I love space saving things though. :)

  • We used the swing for about the first 2 months, and we are still using the bouncy seat.  We borrowed the swing from a friend and bought the bouncy seat.

  • We had a bouncer and a smaller portable swing.  I'm glad we didn't buy a big expensive swing because DD didn't like it and it was a PITA to get her in and out of.  She LOVED the bouncer seat and it wasn't expensive.  I ended up donating the swing when DD was 4 months because it was a waste of space.

Us too.  We burned through a swing and bought a second one.

  • Abby hated the bouncer but lived in the swing for naps for a looong time.

Emily loved the bouncer and napped there until 5 months. I couldn't find all the parts to the swing at the time so we never used it for her but at friends houses she appeared not amused. Easier overall because then I didn't have to break her off the nap/swing habit like I did Abby.

It's always good to have gear. You may use it for another baby or you may need it now. The more tricks you can try with a fussy baby, the better!

  • DD has gone through phases on which she likes more, but ultimately, I'm glad I had both. She slept in the swing for a few weeks, and napped in it up until about 4 weeks ago. No, we don't use the swing as much, but we could not have lived without it.

The bouncy seat she liked as a newborn, then hated for a couple months, and now loves it again. She sits it in while I shower, clean, cook, etc.

Graco makes a swing/bouncer combo for my mother's house, and so far Olivia doesn't really like it. However, that may be because it sits up more than her swing at home ... instead of her laying down. And sadly, I think she's outgrowing the bouncy seat, seeing as she can roll herself out of them Tongue Tied

Anyways .... I wouldn't have given up either of them, since they helped us out so much in the beginning. You know, the hard part? LOL

  • DD loves both.  The swing was a lifesaver early on when she had reflux and wouldn't sleep - she would snooze away in the swing.  Like PP said, the bouncy seat is portable so I take it upstairs when I shower and DD sits in it while I work out.  I know there are kids that don't like the swing and/or the bouncy seat, so make sure you keep the receipts just in case.

  • We also used both.  He would nap in either.  Loved that we could take the bouncy seat with us around the house.
