C section recovery tips

Hello Ladies;

I am having a C section on Thursday. This will be my second C section. My first was  emergency so I didnt have time to research and prepare.
Any tips for speedy recovery are appreciated.

  • My first was unplanned too so I'm getting much more prepared this time around. So far I've gotten the following advice:

Use a binder sooner than later (I had the Belly Bandit but was too afraid to use it until at least 3wks PP. I'm bringing it with me to the hospital this time)
    Walk soon
    Take meds
Bring Boppy or pillow when coughing, nursing or trying to get up from laying down

I'm taking Colace before my c/s to start the horrible recovery. That was the worst. Also, gas pains are also bad, take care of them sooner than they become too uncomfortable

This 100%!  Once you are in pain it's VERY hard to get out. I personally moved around alot b/c my son was in the NICU and they couldn't keep me away LOL. Also loose pants and shirts and if you get staples after they are removed I would use a belly support band earlyer if you have glue. GL and congrats on your LO

  • Definitely get up and walk around just as soon as you can.

If you are in pain at all take the meds, but I never needed them, thankfully.

I'd also recommend pushing fluids.  It not only helps with the swelling lots of women get after a c-section, it also helps with digestive issues.

  • -Stay on top of your meds.  Remember to get them filled at the pharmacy on the way home from the hospital (I forgot about that and ended up in serious pain)

-Walk in the hospital as soon as you can

-Take it easy even when you are feeling better.  You are recovering from surgery so don't push yourself too much in the first weeks

    -Take your stool softeners!

-Don't be afraid to ask for help, tell visitors you need to rest, etc.

And the flip side of getting up- make sure you rest. If you are tired, sleep. The only thing you should be forcing yourself to stay awake for is BFing- visitors can suck it if you are tired.

Definitely this!  My visitors all knew that if I was tired they were welcome to wait in the waiting room while I took a nap, but that could be hours.  Healing has to come before entertaining.

  • I loved my binder it helped me so much.  I wore it just hours after the surgery.  I would get up and move around as soon as you can as well.  The day after my surgery I took a lap around the floor of my hospital and I ate dinner sitting in a chair.  And day 3 I took a shower.  I had horrible gas pains.  They were in my neck and luckily I was given meds to help with it.  Don't walk up and down stairs too much.  I was told only 1 time a day.
