Anyone ever heard of goopy eyes with EI?

A has had an ear infection for over 2 weeks.  They started her on amox, it tore her stomach up and in the meantime her ear ruptured, so they put her on drops, and then it closed and we are on a different antibiotic now.  Today is day 4 of the new med.  This morning she woke up with yellow/green gunky eyes and when I went to visit at lunch they are still gunky and a little red.

Dr. Google tells me this could be because of her EI.  Anyone ever heard of that?

  • Yep, MrsChristmas' DD had the same thing happen to her.  She freaked out because it happened while she had a houseful of kids and thought it was pink eye.  But her pedi said he's just her body's way of draining the extra goop.  Ick!  Hope it clears up soon!

  • Yep.  When V had a cold, her Pedi asked if she had goopy eyes as that was a sign of an EI and she wanted to rule that out.

  • Yup. It was one of the only ways we could tell when Tops had EIs.

  • Ok, good.  Now that I don't have to worry that its pinkeye...

Do I do anything about it?  Is it a sign that I should be suctioning her nose more?

Ummm...how do I break this to you gently...

The bacteria that can cause EIs is the same bacteria that can cause pink eye. So, yeah, be on the lookout for sticky goop, any signs that it's itchy, and (of course) her eye being pink. Lots of hand washing, just in case.

If you do have to get eye medicine, I highly recommend you request the ointment over the drops. The ointment you just have to smear in her eye. Not fun, but it beats having your DH hold her while you hold her eyelid open and then put drops in, which always made me feel like a medieval torturer.

  • Thanks, bluestreet.  We have an appointment for tomorrow.

I just squirted breastmilk into her eye.  Google said that mothers have been treating conjunctivitis for hundreds of years this way.  I figure it can't hurt.
