BM supply question

I've been pumping every 2-3 hours with one session 4-5 hours apart at night since DD was born 6 weeks ago.  I'm still only producing about 17-19 oz in a 24 hour period (no more than 1.5 oz per breast per pump) - the LC at the hospital says because my DD was so early (22weeks 5days) that I will probably produce more milk at some point but I've tried power pumping and pumping longer sessions etc. and it doesnt seem to make a difference in my supply.  Because DD is no tiny they advised me against using any supplements just in case.  Any advice? Anyone else told that their supply is related to the gestational age of their LO as opposed to supply and demand? I'm afraid that once she starts eating I wont have enough

Re: BM supply question

  • So my babies weren't as early as your so maybe that makes a difference. I know for me that my supply was low until I actually got to bf them. I noticed that my pumping session after I would feed them would get me about twice as much as any other time. Baby is just so much more effective than pumping. That said i know it will be a while before you get to try and bf you lo.

Have you tried things like eating oatmeal? I'm sure you're drinking tons of water too. Try not to get too discouraged w/ it. Sending T&P for you and your LO

These are good links.  Also, 17-19 ounces may be enough for a micropreemie.  My little guy is over 8 months old, 5 months adjusted, and he only eats around 14-17 ounces a day still.  Also, you are probably able to freeze a lot of it right now since she is eating so very little in comparison to what you are pumping in a day.  If you need to supplement when she is home, you can pull from your freezer stash.  I have a TON of frozen breastmilk from when my guy wasn't eating much during his first couple of months.

  • Thanks ladies - I have two freezers full and I've started on my moms freezer so I'm sure I'll be able to feed her.  She isnt even eating right now because of some issues shes having.  The LC told me "full supply" was about 32 oz a day! and I read I should be pumping about that right now.  I suppose I'm just over thinking it.  Its simply the only thing I can do for her right now and I want to make sure i'm doing it right

I remember feeling like this too. My LC told me "By not giving up and pumping as much as you can, you are doing it right." She was right, you are giving your LO a great gift and when she can eat, it will make a difference for her. Lots of thoughts and prayers for you as she grows!

  • My micropreemie is now 12 weeks actual, 38 weeks gestation and I just started putting him to breast. I am finally getting more than 17 ounces consistently. Keep your chin up. You'll get there.

  • Eat some oatmeal every morning. That is supposed to help increase your supply. And also make sure you are eating frequently and well balanced, drinking enough water, and getting lots of sleep! Nap if you can, that really helped me. My DD wasn't born as early as your DD, so I didn't hear or experience what you have, but I suppose it's a possibility! Just try not to get stressed out, that is the worst thing for your supply :) You are doing great filling up freezers! At least you are still making milk, that is the most important thing. I was pumping the 32 oz a day and ended up donating 1500 oz bc I just had too much and DD didn't need it all. She was in the nicu for 2 months and then was partially bottle fed at home until we switced to EBF. So I'm SURE you have enough :)

  • Haha, I would love 1.5 oz per breast per bump. Right now I make between 30-50 cc's combined every 3 hours.

I did find that how much water I drink makes a HUGE difference. I drink about 20 oz of water each time I pump. This keeps my supply closer to 50 ccs rather than 20ccs. I have also started 3,500 mg of fenugreek and 9,000 mg of brewers yeast.

I hope it increases for you!! Good Luck.
