Eating sushi - do you do it?

I love sushi. I dont know if i will give it up completely.

What are you doing?

Re: Eating sushi - do you do it?

  • I love sushi as well and if given the chance would probably eat it everyday. However, I will not be eating sushi during this pregnancy at all. I just do not think the risk is worth it in my opinion.

  • I like to think my doctor is really realistic. She told me I could have a few cups of coffee if I needed, enjoy the same workout routine, basically don't change your lifestyle completely. However, one thing she told me to stay away from was all forms of fish. I LOVE sushi and crave it often but I'm not going to eat it. I did get a spring roll, though (all veggies). It helped the craving.

  • I do everything in moderation.

I normally get nigiri when I go for sushi (the raw fish on top of the ball of rice), but when I am pregnant I stick to the rolls and I try to stay away from tuna since it is high in mercury.

  • No. I was told with both my pregnancies that any type of raw meat/fish is a HUGE no-no because of all of the bacteria and diseases that could be passed along to the fetus.

i dont eat any rolls with tuna or yellowtail, but i had Philadelphia rolls with smoked salmon a few times, i read that you can have sushi as long its from a reputable place
  • I typically eat a lot of sushi, but I cut back on it not because of the foodborne illness part (only eat at high end sushi places) but because of the heavy metal levels.

The hard one for me to avoid is tuna, but I do...man I love some tuna sashimi.

  • There are a lot of rolls you can get that contain only cooked ingredients (i.e. California rolls, tempura rolls). Most sushi restaurants have a category on their menus identifying the cooked rolls offered.

  • My doctor said that as long as you're confident that the sushi is extremely fresh, go ahead and eat it.  That said, I didn't partake during my 1st pregnancy.  I was too paranoid to do it.  I remember wanting it towards the end, and even asked DH to bring me some after giving birth.  The second I saw it, I didn't want it.  It was strange.

I probably won't do it this pregnancy either.  m/s is currently kicking my butt and the very idea of sushi is making me want to hurl.  I may consider it if/when the m/s and food aversions go away.

  • I absolutely LOVE sushi and I did have one piece early on, but I really am trying to stay away from any raw fish-just because I don't want to risk any harm to the baby unnecessarily. There are plenty of rolls (crunch rolls, etc.) that don't contain raw fish, I would see if those can fill the void.

  • I eat cooked sushi from time to time.  I eat in moderation to keep down the mercury risk and don't eat raw fish due to listeria risk (which is not an "everything in moderation" type of thing, either you get it or you don't).

  • my doctor said that I was welcome to the veggie roles (avocado, cucumber, spring mix) and the cooked variety if I wanted to but to refrain from eating anything raw.

  • I will not be eating it. I would much rather have a healthy baby then a good piece or pieces of sushi- cooked or raw.

  • I love sushi as well, and have had real sushi once since I have been pregnant but it was before we found out.

I had a shrimp tempura roll and a veggie roll this past week, but it wasn't the same. I don't think I will be having any real sushi until our LO is born.

I have had a lot of complications so far, so it's just not worth risking anything.

Ditto.  I'm refraining, but I guess that's the one upside of m/s.  Right now the thought has me going green, much less eating it.  Indifferent

  • I haven't had any due to the risks, but cooked rolls are okay...I just prefer the raw ones. After the baby is born, I am going to go crazy on the sushi! ;)
  • I Adore sushi!! I will totally continue to eat any cooked rolls as there is no harm in eating cooked food. However I will completely avoid the tuna I so love.

  • I had sushi on Friday-only the cooked rolls.  I had a california roll and a mexican roll.  I only like the cooked rolls anyways so I don't feel like I am missing out since I don't eat the raw.  Even though I only eat the cooked rolls, I am still going to limit how much I eat during my pregnancy.  I will probably have it a few more times.

  • Raw sushi is recommened for pregnant women in Japan  - it is considered a health food.

Your risk of food-borne illness is MUCH higher from beef and chicken than from raw sushi. Raw sushi is flash frozen which kills the bacteria. As long as you are eating from a reputable restaurant you are just fine, and in fact are safer than eating a chicken sandwich or a burger from a fast food joint.

The only exceptions are that you should avoid fish high in mercury and also know that raw shellfish carries a slightly higher risk of food-borne illness.

  • I will be avoiding the raw stuff and eat cooked.  MH and sister are both sushi fanatics (as am I) so I know I will be at a sushi restaurant sooner or later.

You obviously took the warning too literally.  When they say sushi they mean the raw stuff.  Why wouldn't you eat the cooked stuff?   Do you really think that they mean the cooked stuff too?

  • I'll avoid the raw fish (well, maybe stealing a piece of salmon from DH wouldn't be too bad... Smile ).  Then again, I like the raw stuff way better than anything that's cooked... so I'm not sure if it would even be worth it.

  • Was planning on eating a California roll, but then got scared by cross contamination, so will be avoiding it. Call me paranoid, but oh well! :)

All of this. I've had sushi several times already. I am staying away from tuna, but enjoyed some raw salmon.

  • I cut back from about once a week to about once a month & I don't eat nearly as much tuna as I would like.  I generally go to 2 places & I know that the fish is fresh & have never had any sickness problems or know anyone that has.

  • I am avoiding sushi that has raw fish in it -- yes, there are sushi that have cooked seafood (ie cooked crabmeat, cooked eel [I love unagi]) or only veggies.  It's not worth risking a bad bacterial infection.

  • Even if you are eating cooked sushi you still run the risk of cross contamination just as an FYI. I eat raw sushi but only from one place that I know is reputable. My OB has no issue with it.
  • cooked, yes
