Anyone having to supplement SOME of the time?

My supply is all over the place (I EP) and I really never know how much BM I will have the next day. Yesterday, I had to give LO an entire bottle of BM because I got nothing out of my pumping session.. but the next time I pumped I got 5 ounces! I feel like this will make her belly upset..and I don't want to do that!! I called her pedi and talked to a nurse.. but she didn't speak much English just kept saying "just mix them and she's fine". So, I don't think she really understood what I was saying!

Any suggestions?

I am in the same boat as you, I EP and my supply is all over the place also. I tried power pumping and still cant get a good steady supply. Sometimes I can only get 1 ounce from each side and it is really frustrating that I might have to go to full formula soon.

I tried mixing half BM and half formula and that seems to work out just fine. I don't like doing it because there are so many rules about formula which are not in place for BM. I recently went back to full BM during the day and formula only at night(both the before bed feeding and the MOTN feeding). This allowed me to be able to get ahead of DS in my stocked up supply. I do have some frozen BM but I want to save those for emergencies.

Ultimately, your LO will be able to adapt to whatever you are feeding her, as long as you are feeding her! I have spoken to many healthcare professionals and they say that switching between BM and formula will not bother the baby, it would be the type of formula. Hope this helps and sorry if it doesn't!

  • The only way I can stay ahead of DS is to pump every 3 to 6 hours and give him BM by bottle during the day and formula at night.  He gets about 3 bottles of formula each night.  When I pump, I average about 4oz per session, which is exactly how much he is eating these days.  I'm worried if he starts eating much more than that, I won't be able to keep up and have to go to full time formula.  I guess only time will tell.  The mastitis I had a couple weeks ago in my left breast has really decreased the amount that comes out of that one.

DS seems to do just fine with the formula.  We give it to him only at night because it's a little thicker and so he'll generally sleep a little bit longer between feedings while eating the formula.  That may be something for you to consider trying.  I'm sure your LO will adapt just fine.

  • I never knew what I was going to be able to pump before I started primarily FF (due to poor supply). I was leary of mixing the two, so I would pump until I had a full bottle of BM, and then alternate a BM bottle and a formula bottle. I would only feed formula at night though, to hopefully fill her up.

  • As far as getting formula and BM, she will be fine.  But my story has a bit of a different problem.  At 1 month I started my LO on one bottle of formula at night to help hold her off a little.  (I don't pump, I've never been able to get very much)  She was EBF, but up every hour overnight, UGH!

Well it worked great for a few days, until she started wanting the bottle more and more.  She's now 2 months old and I have been fighting her every time I feed her!  She will start a nursing feeding with crying and not wanting to take my breast.  So I give her her binky for about ten min. to calm her down and then I can USUALLY get her to suck from me.  Last night was horrible.  it took almost an hour for one feeding!!!  At 4 am, that sucks.  Especially when I have to get up with my 3 older kids at 6!

I would say that if she starts showing signs of prefering formula over the breast, stop the formula.  I can't tell you the problems this has caused us!   Good luck!

  • I also wanted to add that the more you nurse, the more you will produce.  Let her eat every 2 hrs. The more she sucks the better.  For me, now at night my right breast doesn't produce hardly ANY milk anymore!  So because of the formula, I'm starting to dry up in the evening :(

  • I give my son formula at night usually the 3 a.m and the 6 a.m feeding when I just want to try to feed him and sleep- breast feeding just takes a long time.  I pump in the morning and then I have my 9 am feeding and then I pump at 9 for 12 and so on... I was feeding him from my breast at first but I find it very frustrating not knowing how much hes getting and he gets frustrated and I really dont know why- is it coming out too fast or too slow?  Not to mention it really hurts!  I did it the other day and my nipple wasn't the same for a couple days! As long as he gets my milk thats what counts- Also he has never had a problem due to the formula at night- I am considering switching it to the organic formula just because it sounds like a healthier option for formula. I can't wait until the feedings are less frequent and the night time sleep is longer!
