Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

toddler bed

Hey all,

just looking for some general advice on transitioning my 21 month old to a toddler bed (converting his crib). Right now it's on the lowest setting and he hasn't, but totally could climb out.

my biggest worry is that he'll climb on things in his room. Thinking about taking out all the shelves/dressers. What did you do if you have a climber?

TIA!

edit:

also, he's scheduled for surgery in 3 weeks and I don't know if we want to transition now or hope he doesn't climb out and wait til after his recovery. Just looking for someone with experience in transitioning their kids.

Re: toddler bed

  • DS doesn't climb out yet, but we've been preparing to move him to a bed soon since we're trying for #2.

We had already strapped all furniture to the walls for earthquakes and so he doesn't pull it down on top of him. As far as climbing up on *top* of the furniture... I guess we'll just have to hope he doesn't... there is no way we can move everything out - we don't have anywhere to put it. But all of the furniture is pretty low. I would probably switch out anything high up that he could fall off of.

  • thanks!

we have cube shelves attached to the walls. I'm concerned about his dresser since the drawers aren't study enough to hold him, they'd break and he could get hurt. Nothing is super high though.

I'm expecting #2 and we're thinking of cleaning out our guestroom for a play room (we have 3 VERY small bedrooms) and putting climbable stuff in there. Then keeping his bedroom pretty bare. Then we'd move the baby in to share a bedroom around 6 months (after being in our room).

    That's just one option though!

  • If you're worried about the dresser drawers put the child proof straps on them so he can't pull them open.  If he can't open them he can't climb in / on them.
  • I guess I should have mentioned that he has figured out the childproof straps. We had them in the kitchen...fail! plus I don't really want to stick anything to the dresser and ruin the finish. It's a changer that matches the crib.

if we had the extra room I'd probably opt for a more bare bedroom if only because I love having more minimal feel and space to move. and the peace of mind of KNOWING there was nothing dangerous would be worth it to me.

we only have two VERY small bedrooms, though! so I don't have the option. Sad
