Cooling off LO during the warm months

So DH and I learned at our Caring for your Newborn class a couple of weeks ago that you shouldn't have anything in the crib the first couple of months (we plan to use a bassinet in our room the first few weeks).  Of course I have all these crib blankets, bumpers etc that I can't use when we finally move LO to the nursery.

We attended our first breastfeeding class last Monday and SIDS came up again and the nurse instructor mentioned not having anything in the crib and to use a fan to circulate air (which I guess has been linked to SIDS) and now my question.  We own a small cape which overheats (like 10-20 degrees hotter) in the bedrooms upstairs compared to downstairs.  We use an air-conditioner to bring down the temp which we're now debating using when LO arrives.  Have you heard, read or plan to use an air-conditioner in your nursery?  If not, how do you plan to cool down the room during the warm months?

Re: Cooling off LO during the warm months

  • DD#1 was born April 9 - we used our central air in our home during the warm months. I also had a circulating fan in the room with her crib. I just dressed her warm enough so she wasn't so cold - usually in a sleep sack at night.

  • Central air is essential here in Atlanta so I will have air conditioning on and a ceiling fan in the nursery to keep the air circulating.  Will likely just have baby in one layer more than us.

  • Im due 9/4, LO will be in our room for a month or so.  I know our AC will be on.  Its an old house & it gets hot upstairs.  He wont be in the direct path of the AC, plus i will make sure he is warm, but not to warm.

I didn the same with my older boys.

Last time around, with our winter baby....we were on the 5th floor of an old NYC apt building with absolutely NO control of the heat!!!  Think steam heat.. our windows wide open in the winter!!!  We had a ceiling fan... she was in a bassinet for I think 2 or 3 months in our room.. and then we used a portable crib in our room (bc of space).  We moved when she was 6 months and she had her crib in her nursery of our house with an AC on (it was summer by then).. with a light blanket.

As for the blanket issue.. You could put your LO in a sleeper with AC on...(that's probably what I'm going to do.. we have a cape, too.. and his BR will be upstairs)  I wasn't a fan of the sleepsacks as much.  We did swaddle my daughter when really young. until she started breaking free.

FWIW.. I got the "breathable" bumpers from Buy Buy Baby.. and used them at first.. bc I was worried she'd bump her head.. but they only covered the slats, not the sides.. so once she was rolling, lifting her head, squirming around.... she would bump/knock her head in the middle of the night and it would wake her up.... so I put the pretty plush bumpers on (she was probably 8 or 9 months old at that point)... and they're loosely tied.  Now at 16 months, when she steps on them.. they sort of collapse and don't give her any leverage to climb out of crib, but yet they protect her head so she can sleep... She tends to sleep with her face IN the side of the crib (yes.. nervewracking.. but somehow soothing for her to have something cozy on her face.....so I still go in and check on her to make sure she's breathing each night....  ) but she's okay... :)

  • I spent a very hot Australian summer with a newborn, and no air con. Weeks of 95-113F.

We did just fine . Breastfeeding more often on hot days is crucial as the skin to skin contact cools LO down and provides extra fluid. The breastmilk also adjusts itself during hot weather which i think is amazing :)

I also gave him tepid/cool baths on particularly hot days. All in all he didnt seem bothered by the heat as much as it bothered me.

Air con would have been great though.....

  • our 1st babies were born in june and we used our central air the entire summer. they slept in onesies and a swaddling blanket.  i think for the first month or so we had them wear little knit caps as well.

  • We ended up adding room darkening shades to LO room to help keep it cool as well.  But dressing appropriately and circulating air are very important the first few months.
