Two Under 2

talk to me about gifts (those that have the same sex )

Okay...My girls are 18 months apart.  They are close, but not that close that the same gifts will always apply to both at the same time, but not far enough that you would replace old with new.

So my question is....My daughter will be turning 2 in August, and I was going to get her a play kitchen, but then thought to myself that it would end up being both girls kitchen eventually maybe I should wait till Christmas (DD1 would be 2 yr 4 months old and DD2 would be 10 months old) and get it for both of them...even though DD2 would still be too young really for it.

Then it got me thinking...what the heck am i going to do about birthdays etc. because dd1 will always be handing down things to dd2...and that isnt right either.

I am most likely obsessing about this, but when my mom had 2 under 1 and they were a boy and a girl (my much younger sister and brother) it just seemed much easier!  Plus, all of my stuff was already old or gone so she had to buy new.

WDYT about the play kitchen? what do you do/plan on doing about gifts?

  • if you get her a wooden kitchen or one that is a bit older then DD#1 can actually keep it as "hers" for quite a while. Mine has a wooden kitchen in her room and #2 isn't mobile yet. I don't agree with giving #2 all hand me downs either. Just try and find items that fit each of their ages/personalities. Of course they will share each toy but you can still gift new items to each girl :)

DD#1 got a swing set for her 2nd bday and eventually the other kiddos will all be playing on it.

  • I'm not worrying about it much at all. By the time they are old enough to really care about gifts, they will have their own interests and probably be asking for different things. Until then, they will mostly share.

  • We get them each their own gifts but tell them they have to share. They end up playing with each other's stuff anyway.  I was worried about what to do before holidays and birthdays.  They're not old enough now to ask for certain gifts. We get gifts for DS#1 knowing DS#2 will play with it soon enough.

  • We don't get the kids anything for their birthdays, they get enough stuff from their party and my parents/in-laws, they dont need anything specifically from "us".  Now that the boys are older we take them out to dinner (usually friendly's, chili's etc.) and they are happy with that.  For Christmas they each get their own presents from santa (3) and they pick out of a hat to "buy" something for one of their siblings.  Personally I'd wait until Christmas for the Kitchen and it can be for both of them.

this. I'm #2 of 3u3, all girls, and we each got new stuff but shared things (happily and willingly, believe it or not) for the most part. I'd give your DD the kitchen for her b-day. She will likely learn to expect to share toys.

  • I've been thinking about the same thing.  I'm expecting DD2 this summer and we're also debating when to buy DD1 some larger items like a kitchen set, table and chairs, etc...  DD1 would be interested in the kitchen set now but I also don't want her to think that it's only "hers" and potentially have "sharing" issues in the future (though I suppose that's bound to happen!).

I grew up with 3 sisters and remember sharing the bigger toys...but we didn't have very many of them, most of the time we only got smaller individual gifts.
