VBAC

VBAC after VBAC?

Haha this is stupid, but if you have a successful VBAC and want to have another vaginal for your next child, is it still a VBAC? or just a normal vaginal delivery since you already mastered the VBAC once?

Even if it's a VBAC, I'm assuming it's easier to find providers to okay it considering you've already done it once? I might be in a different state by the next baby, so I don't want to worry about finding a supportive group like I did this time.

Any ideas?

Re: VBAC after VBAC?

  • Yes, it is still considered a VBAC, maybe more appropriately called a 2VBAC? You're correct that it should hopefully be easier the second time in terms of finding a supportive provider, so long as you aren't navigating around hospital bans or other such nonsense.

  • Still a VBAC, but I have heard many doctors that are more willing to allow a VBAC if your uterus has already been "tested" by a previous VBAC.

  • Yes once a VBAC always a VBAC. It seems weird to refer to it like that though. My second VBAC was much more relaxed then my first. I was able to go to a BC, have a water birth, whatever I wanted. The only thing That was out of the ordinary was that I went for an U/S at 36 weeks to make sure the placenta hadn't attached to my previous scar and she checked my scar after delivery. Other then that it was business as usual :)

  • If you've already had a successful VBAC, your odds of uterine rupture are much lower--but still higher than a mom who's never had a c/s.  You may have an easier time finding a provider.  Some midwives and birth centers will not do primary VBAC but will take moms who have already had a previous successful VBAC and doctors may also be more willing to take you on.

However, this isn't always the case.  If there is a VBAC ban at a hospital, it may not matter that you've already had a VBAC.  Check out Joy Szabo's case--she had a VBAC at her local hospital.  Then the hospital banned VBAC and when she got pregnant again, the same hospital told her she would need to have a RCS.  She had to temporarily move to another city to be able to deliver vaginally.

  • Great question!  I had a VBAC with #2 and I have wondered what it would be called this time around!  Good luck to you.

  • You are still a vbac...

The provider thing was weird for me...one doctor I interviewed actually asked if I was just going to do the section this go around since I had had my "normal" birthing expirience(sp)...yeah, did not go with that guy.  It seemed some practices still had the same restrictions that I would have had with my first vbac...
