Sugar and IF

Has anyone else been told to avoid sugar and all processed foods?  My acupuncturist recommended that I avoid gluten, sugar and all processed foods.  Does this seem a bit extreme?

Maybe I should be taking her advice more to heart but IF is hard enough without removing foods that I enjoy!  I eat a healthy balanced diet but I mix in the good stuff too like chocolate.  Again, this did not come from my doctor.

Can you imagine?  No sugar + no caffeine + no gluten + no snack food "processed foods" + Hormones being messed with + IF?????  = CRAZY PERSON!  Or at least it would for me.  LOL!

Re: Sugar and IF

  • ...and no drink at the end of a hard week!  IF blows.

I have been told a lot of things during this journey, but I think most doctors, specialists, and health fanatics will support your idea of a healthy, balanced, diet, with everything in moderation - with the exception of a few things that are known to impact fertility (like our morning coffee).  Avoiding processed foods is just a good practice regardless if you're TTC or not, but every once in a while, it's good to still live a little Smile

  • My RE told me no sugar. Everything I eat is sugar free and whole wheat and I also get lots of exercise. But no processed foods or anything??? I think that's a little extreme.

  • Honestly, a lot of the advice I've read on TTC seems a bit extreme. If I had to restrict or even eat and take all the supplements I've read about I would be going crazy. I tried at first to listen to things and ate so much pineapple core I can't even look at pineapple anymore.

Many of us have been doing this a lot longer and I think there's a general consensus that you still need to live your life through all of this. Eat healthy, incorporate what you can if you are trying to follow the advice of your RE or even your natural health practioner but understand that being mentally okay with this process is sometimes even more important than the physical and take care of yourself.

I have to say I agree with your last statement. Being mentally healthy when dealing with infertility is more important than physical, in my opinion. You have to accept the process and be okay with it or else ALL of it is going to be VERY difficult on you.

  • Yes I do all this. And it's not that extreme, at least I already ate pretty close to that anyway. No artificial sweeteners, local, then organic, then natural. No dairy. Chocolate has caffeine.

It's up to you and what you're comfortable with, and with moderation. It's not about never ever if that doesn't work into your lifestyle.

To be honest, I eat fairly clean and I feel much better now that I've cut out gluten. If I eat anything sweet it's often followed by a big headache. In truth, I rarely have any of the crumbs cupcakes I often speak of.

In all honesty, I sort of think part of it is a psychological aid so that you have something in your life you can control, since you can't control your IF.

  • I cut out all sugar, flour, and processed foods for a cycle by following the EZ Diet. It didn't make a bit of difference for me in terms of success and it greatly increased my misery. I won't be doing it again.

  • In my personal opinion I think that everything in moderation is what is good for your body. There has been studies that say the "no carb diets" and no this and no that are not great for you. Again these are my personal thoughts but your body needs fat, protein, sugar, carbs and so on to survive. You are going through so much and so much stress on your body with IVF again I say everything in moderation. I am no doctor but I can tell you that during my IVF and hopefully one day when I do get the chance to be pregnant I will feel this exact same way.
