Breastfeeding

Surgery and Breastfeeding?

So I am going to have surgery on Wednesday to remove my gallbladder.  I'm nervous about the surgery, but also nervous about how I'm going to do with pumping at the hospital.  I should only be there that day as long as everything goes good.  I've had different people tell me that I didn't have to throw out that milk and some say that I have to throw it out for several days.  Just seeing if anyone here has had surgery and what they did with their milk?

Re: Surgery and Breastfeeding?

  • My Dr. said it woul be best to just toss the first one or two pumpings and that I should be fine to breastfeed that evening.  I am having mine out on May 5th at 7:30am.  DS will be at daycare until 4pm anyway so it should all work out just fine.

  • Talk to the anesthesiologist.  Mine looked everything up and told me I could continue to feed after 6-8 hours.  I pumped right before they gave me the first meds and it worked out that 6-8 hours was just when I finally got comfortable at home and with DS again.
