Labor orgasm?

I watched something on TV about having an orgasm during labor.  Is this something that you just do or do you actually go over it with your MW or doula?!?!  It's enticing to me b/c it's better to have that than the actual pain, but I'd be mortified for people to see that and know what was happening!  It's like an orgy and I'd be the only participant.  Weird!  Did this happen to anyone or was that just for TV?  I spoke with some friends, who have babies, about it and they don't see how that's possible!

Re: Labor orgasm?

  • I really hope that this is not true! The very idea of it makes me cringe.  It also makes me laugh...but it is NOT funny if it might happen to me!

Please let this be a myth!

  • When I had Jack, there was a girl on the boards who swore she did.  She never seemed crazy before, but that just seems very weird to me.  Nothing about contractions was pleasurable to me, haha!

  • Yes, it's true; some women can and do. Rent the movie "Orgasmic Birth". I haven't seen it yet, but it's on my queue. I'm not looking for the experience, but I'm just curious about it!

  • I heard once that that was what the g-spot is for. Sort of a natural pain reliever.
  • Weird, weird, weird! I dont understand how it would happen at all.
  • I would have to say that of all the things I can think of labor least resembles an orgasm.  At least, it sure didn't for me.

  • there was NOTHING orgasmic about birthing my twins...pretty sure this time will be the same.

  • After giving birth, I cannot imagine how that would happen. Nor would I want it to since you're kinda focused on another task at that moment. And then, how would you feel it if you have an epidural?? Just wondering.
  • I've not known a single person (at least that fessed up to it). I most certainly did not.

  • The only "happy ending" I had was DS being born healthy. There is nothing pleasurable, IMO, about labor and delivery other than seeing your baby.

  • hells-to-the-NO...i don't see how the words organsm and birth can possibly used in the same sentence.  everything about birth was painful and uncomfortable.

  • Orgasm has been a natural remedy for bad menstrual cramps forever, so I guess it's possible, but, um, "inducing" an orgasm in front of the medical team and doula, with DH looking on is way too weird for me.

I am LOL at this entire paragraph. Are you thinking you'd like to discuss this with your doula and see how you can try to make it happen, or what?! I have heard of women experiencing this before (only on tv documentaries), but it's not like for them labor is just one giant orgasm and therefore they felt no pain...

  • Bwhahahaha!  I'm thinking it's like a unicorn or Nessie....fun to think about, and keeps us distracted...

Although *after* the baby is out...blessed, blessed relief...you're totes giddy. But definitely not *o* giddy.

My delivery nurse was massaging my perineal area during labor, to lessen the chance that I'd have a tear.  I knew they did that, and figured that's what she was doing, but all I could feel was some (painless) pressure.  When she left the room, my mom looked at me in horror and asked, "What on EARTH is that nurse doing to your vagina?!?!?"  Guess they didn't do perineal massages back in the 80s. Lol

  • I think I was watching A Baby Story on TLC and a woman was trying water birth at a birth center. She was making the strangest noises and my husband walked in and thought I was watching porn! I think maybe she was having an orgasm during her birth? Lol

The orgasm isn't induced, hahaha   God damn that'd be creepy.

The women transform their pain into something else that eventually turns into something more pleasurable than disappointing. It makes sense, though, because both orgasms, pain, and labor use many of the same hormones.

  • There are some serious misconceptions about what an orgasm during birth is in this post lol.  Think of it this way - your baby is coming out of your vagina, and it is totally possible for that baby's head to rub against/stimulate your clitoris, vagina, etc.  So for some women an orgasm can happen due to that fact.  It is NOT induced by the nurse or midwife as a means of reducing pain.  And it usually happens only at the very very end of the birth and doesn't last long at all.  It isn't like the woman is in one 13 hour long state of ecstasy because her labor keeps giving her orgasms with every contraction - that would be weird.  As far as I know, the occurance of an orgasm at the time of delivery is rare.  I wouldn't count on it happening to you.
