Biting

What can I do about an almost 9 month old going through a biting stage? We say "ouch! that hurts" with a serious tone of voice and redirect him, but he thinks it's hilarious. He seriously tries to bite us all the time, and those little baby teeth hurt! He's too young for time out or anything like that. I'm clueless here.

Re: Biting

  • C went through a biting phase at 11ish months. The one thing that really put a stop to it was saying (sternly) "Do not bite Mommy", setting him down and just walking away. The walking away part really stunned him, even just to the other side of the room.

That and we started reading "Teeth Are Not for Biting" every day.  J didn't bite much and it was maining just me or the dog...

It totally stopped after we started reading the book.

  • Thanks, those are good suggestions. I'll try putting him down and walking away for a few days, and if he still doesn't get it, I'll get the book.

this worked for us with T, too. may need to pull that dusty trick out of hiding soon, as A is discovering her teeth and gnawing on everything - including my arm, finger, shoulder, etc! it was fine until she got an opposing tooth. now she can actually bite down and those tiny things can do some damage!

  • Saying NO, putting her down and walking away was the only thing that worked for Maggie when she started hair pulling and laughing about it.  She did cry pretty hard at the putting down and walking away part but when they are that young I couldn't think o fmuch else to try and end it.
