Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What is your child afraid of?

We just discovered that Hudson is deathly afraid of white noise - you know the fuzzy screen on the television set?  He freaks out instantly and cries and won't even look at it.  It's like he had a tramatic experience with it.  I feel so bad for him and he had a death grip on me.  Even if it is muted and he just sees the fuzz part of it, he doesn't want to look at it.

What about your LO?

  • Loading the player...
  • The sound of a power drill (we've been renovating since LOs were born so I told DH that it haunted them in their sleep at night)

Packing tape being ripped off of a box (no idea)

A loon stuffed animal that makes the loon call (sad about this one, since I'm from Maine and LOVE that sound)

Here comes Baby #3! BabyFruit Ticker Lilypie Third Birthday tickers
  • Cats! Black to be specific.. We were at my madres a few weeks ago and Khari was crawling by the balcony door... The neighbors cat (black!) jumped over to my moms side and Khari FLIPPED HER SHIIT. It was so sad... She kept peeking back over her shoulder to see if the cat was still there then she would scream.. At first I didn't know what she was crying about so I was all look a kitty outside and took her CLOSER to the window.. When I realized it I turned her around (that's when she started peeking).. So sad. Oh and kinda the vacuum... if I'm holding her while vacuuming she's fine and laughs and touches it. Or if she's on the couch she laughs at it.. but if she's on floor she freaks out!
  • A bunch of people clapping and yelling "yay! good job!" all at once. I can just imagine how his birthday is going to go.

  • The vacuum.  This makes cleaning a pain in the butt.  He does OK if he can't see it, but once he sees it, he turns on the waterworks and screaming and doesn't stop.  I've even tried holding him while vacuuming and that didn't help.

  • Ditto on the vaccum.  It does not even have to be turned on for him to crawl as fast as he possibly can in the other direction.

  • Santa, Easter Bunny, and a remote control car that my DH and his friend where playing with yesterday. DS had the kung fu death grip on me yesterday.

  • Golden-doodles. We have two dogs (Lab and a hound mutt) that LO has never had a negative reaction to, and she seems to like the neighbor's husky mix, but I was holding her when a friend's golden-doodle gently sniffed her and she screamed like I've never heard her scream before.

  • Let's see...the vacuum cleaner, my electric mixer, hair dryer, power drill...we can't even vacuum when DS is home because he goes absolutely ballistic. He's gotten better about the hair dryer, but I have to keep the bathroom door shut.

This.  If something seems to freak him out, I keep exposing him to it and assure him it's ok.  It worked with the vacuum.

  • The inflate yellow duck that you can buy before they are ready for the normal tub. My parents bought one for their house and he cries hysterically through every bath in it. Even when DH, who does almost all the baths at home tried. It's pretty funny because it's so ridiculous.

This. DS has been startled by loud noises but was never continuously afraid of anything. I'm surprised at how many LOs are afraid of the vacuum or blow dryer. Those are the two things that used to put him to sleep when he was a newborn...weirdo!

  • The Barbary sheep mounted in our living room. She is not scared of looking at it and points to it all the time but when she gets too close to it she freaks. Yay for DH being a big hunter!
  • Dogs.  But not big ones, see siggy-little ones that run around in circles and yap.
  • anything with a loud motor.  I am trying to expose him and get him used to things, but he just ends up crying hysterically and it doesn't seem to do much good.

Oh well, I will keep at it and hopefully he will get used to it someday.

  • For some reason she's terrified of DH's dad. He used to be all smiles with her and now makes negative comments because she won't hang out with him. His issue as DD loves everyone else. She puts her hands above her head and cries and cries.
  • Church ladies.

You'd think they'd learn to stay out of his face and quit yelling at him and getting up in his business when he cries at them Every. Single. Week.
