Austin Babies

trying not to stress/freak out here....

So back in December I had to take Mason (my dog) to the ER Vet for a clogged anal gland. They had to sedate him and cut it open to drain it. This morning I (thankfully!) let him out one last time before I left the house and he started scooting on his rear. I got him back inside and that same anal gland was swollen. I packed him up and took him to my vet. The vet looked at it and while he seemed shocked at how swollen/inflamed (sp?) it was he was also surprised that this is only the 2nd time it has happened with Mason. He gave him some pain meds and antibiotics and said it would rupture within 24 hours or so and to keep an eye on him. I told him I planned to let him stay at the vet for the day (extra $7) as opposed to taking him back to Kyle and then coming back to Austin for work. He said that since he would be there anyways he would just go ahead and sedate Mason and drain the gland....oy vey!

Yay for quickly getting this taken care of and getting him on the road to recovery but booo for me having to be at work and my dog having to go thru all of this. I'm a basket case. And...I'm trying hard not to think of what this is going to cost me. I'd do anything for my dogs but the hits just seem to keep on comin' to my pocket book!

  • Have they already done the procedure?  If he was ok with sending him home and letting it rupture on his own, I think I'd call and tell them to just let it be.  Why pay for the procedure if its going to take care of itself?

  • my dog has had the same problem twice in the past, and we took him in so they could properly drain it, clean it and use anti-biotics. now when we take him in for his annual shots, we ask them to express his anal glands as (hopefully) a preventative measure.

    poor pup.

  • I'm just talking big.  I'd pay to have it taken care of just to make the dog more comfortable.  I'm just saying if cost is a very big issue, you might as what your options are.

I think what the vet was saying was that it was bad enough that it should rupture within the next 24 hours. The pain medication and antibiotics would help. Even then it is guaranteed- he might have to come back Wednesday or Thursday. I opted to let the vet do it to get the hard/bad part out of the way and get Mason onto recovery. I know it is more $$$ but I'll do a payment plan of some sort. I just didn't want to think about Mason scooting around the house trying to force it to rupture.

  • @el_twirpo- yeah, I think that is my next step. They recommended to bring him in monthly to have them do it for $13.

@LLCG- yeah, I know it is adding more on...unfortunately. They are reasonable with their prices so I am hoping that much is on my side.

  • Does your groomer express your dog's anal glands?

We have a poodle and she has to be groomed every 6-8 weeks.  Our old groomer was supposed to express them, but she wasn't and we had to take Ninja in for pain meds, antibiotics, and expression by the vet.  Twice.  We have a new groomer now and I'm much happier.

I'm pretty sure that she does. I took him to get groomed on Feb 26th and mentioned to her about his December visit to the ER and she said she would be careful.

  • We take our dog to the vet every six weeks or so to get his glands expressed. It's really worth the $. Sorry your guy is having this problem!

  • Coopers anal glands are, um, shocking.

We "warn" the vet each time that his glands are 'unlike any other' (a vet once informed me...).  His shoot across the room and smell like something died.  We go every four weeks without fail to have his expressed by the vet.  Worth every penny.

I'm sorry Mason is dealing with that.  He'll feel a ton better once it's all over!

  • $127 later...Mason is at home and confined to a small corner. He's still very tipsy. Looks like I'll start monthly trips to the vet for the anal gland expressions. I hate seeing him like this.
