Need help RE: Knee Pain

I started the couch to 5k program 4 weeks ago to help shed the baby weight.  I was doing really well, but this week I've had such bad knee pain I can hardly stand running.  I'm fine when walking, but the second I start running it just becomes horrible.

Has anyone else experienced this?  Do you have any advice on how to ease the pain?  I am worried that all of the progress I have made is going to go down the drain because it is just too painful to run.

  • If you can, you might want to get it checked out.

I have had recent knee pain too and the only thing that has helped is Tylenol and icing it a few times a day. I would start with that but definitely stay off of it if you want it to heal. Good luck!

Oh, and what about walking on an incline? Believe it or not, you can get an amazing workout from that and it's much easier on the joints.

  • I have had horrible knee problems/pain since I was about 12, so I completely understand the frustration.

I usually would take some Advil or some Aleve (pre-pg) before doing any kind of activity that I knew would cause pain. That helped a lot. Icing also helps.

I agree with PP, if you walk on an incline on a treadmill at a decent pace, you'll definitely get just as good a workout. You can also try running in a pool if you have access to one. That relieves pressure off of your joints.

  • Thank you for the advice!  I will give it all a try!

I'm PP and training for my 3rd sprint triathlon and I take Glucosamine for my joints. It really works for me - You might want to research it.
  • I would recommend getting a foam roller and rolling out your IT bands (the ligament that runs from your hip down to your knee).  I have worked with a lot of beginner runners, and runner's knee is very common.  It is most often because of tight ligaments.  The foam roller is inexpensive and will absolutely help.  Here is a link to an article with photo instructions on how to do it:

I would also recommend stretching your hips aggressively after a run.  Pigeon pose is the perfect post-run stretch.  HTH!
