Triathletes - Cycling and pregnancy question!

When you found out you were pregnant, for how long did you keep cycling?  Did you keep on for a while, or stick to running/swimming after that?

I've been doing some Google research, and so far, the answer is "You know when you feel off balance" - did you guys have that experience?

Re: Triathletes - Cycling and pregnancy question!

  • I think it depends...belly size, comfort etc.  I went for a bike ride a couple of weeks ago at 21 weeks pregnant just fine.  I also remember going for a short bike ride when I was 33 weeks pg during my 2nd pg.  At some point your belly gets pretty big and you'd either have to adjust your handle bars especially if you are a triathlete and have them pretty low.  I know for spin class I have to keep moving my seat forward and become more upright as my belly grows or else I wouldn't be pedaling with my legs straight.

  • I only cycled indoors on my trainer.  It's not whether you feel like you'll fall over or what not.  It's about the fact that, while cycling, you put yourself in danger of something happening like getting hit by a car, or breaking a skewer, or ::insert some other random wreck::.  There are a lot of things you just can't control and I wasn't comfortable risking it.

The bike will be there after you deliver.

  • Cool, thanks for the input.  I am not pg yet, just thinking forward. :)  Drivers here are surprisingly good about cyclists (famous last words?), so I worry more about what happens with my own center of balance (and things like skewers, flats, etc).  I could definitely get more cozy with a spinervals dvd!
  • I live in Denmark and cycled to work everyday until I was 6 months pregnant, but this was something that I was used to doing!

I do NOT agree that cycling is risky, and you should be stopping if it is your lifestyle (no car for me) etc....I bet statistically you are more likey to be in a car wreck than a wreck on your bike.  Just saying....

I agree with you to a point.

But, a commuter bike is much more comfy and easy to control than a tri bike. the agressive position can be rough for a non PG person. & a wreck to a PG woman on a bike would cause more physical damage than a car accident.

  • I also switched to my trainer as soon as I found out I was pregnant.  Its not worth the risk IMO of falling or getting hit.  I am almost 20 weeks and can still ride comfortably indoors.
