Babies: 6 - 9 Months

MIL (sort of ) vent - wwyd?

So we hosted Easter yesterday - My mom and IL's came over.  About 1/2 hour or so after everyone got to the house and we hung up coats and got settled, I was holding LO and mil came over to me and said "Oh I'll take him" and proceeded to take him from me - she took him right out of my arms.   I was so shocked at her just taking him - I just stood there..Has this ever happened to any of you ladies? I suppose I could have held him tight and not let her take him - but I dont want her not to hold him if she wants - shes pretty nice - we get along most of the time...but I think maybe she should have asked if it was okay  to take him?

Thoughts?

  • My MIL does this all the time and it has never bothered me. I think it is normal.

This. It was pass the baby all day yesterday. But I don't read anything into it. They love DD just as much as I love DD. I can share. :)

  • Yeah, my MIL doesn't "ask" me. A lot of times she'll just put her arms our and kind of just look at me, which is fine. Gives my arms a break. If he fusses, she can either deal with him or give him back to me.

Sorry, but I do think you are over thinking this a little. Your LO is her grandchild, so she's not some stranger.

  • I think you are overreacting a bit.
  • I think she was probably just excited to see him.  I think my mom did this when she saw LO this weekend.  She was just so exicted to see him that she scooped him up almost right away.  If your LO doesn't mind it then try not to let it get to you.
  • I didn't know this wasn't normal grandparent behavior.

This. If you didn't have any problem with her holding him, then I don't see what the big deal is.

    Yes

  • I'll be the dissenting opinion.

It would bother me too.  Here is why:  I'm a working mom.  I'm away from my son 8+ hours every  weekday.  When I get a chance to spend a lot of time with him, I enjoy it.  I don't mind holding my own child; in fact, I cherish it.

When people demand its their turn (i.e. not asking to hold him) or act like they're doing me a favor by taking him off my hands...they're not.

I don't have a problem with other people holding him; I have a problem with people assuming I need / want a break from my own son.

  • My in-laws don't EVER see my son. At Christmas he was 4 months old and my FIL came over to me and tried to scoop LO out of my arms WHILE I was feeding him. I reacted by moving LO and he was shocked. It normally doesn't bother me, but since my in-laws never see him, he DOES cry when they hold him so I try and limit that.

Yea, my mom and my MIL do this all the time. And my FIL is starting to do it too. Just love DD and want to hold her.  And I agree with PP, it gives me a break.  I took a 2 hr nap yesterday while the grandparents took/played with DD! It was FABULOUS!!! =)  First nap I've had since DD was about 3 weeks old! HAHA
I agree she probably should have asked or something.  But I'm sure she was just excited to see the baby.

  • Everyone I know generally asks to hold DS, or reaches out for him with a "COME HERE, BIG GUY" grin on their face, so I really don't know what I would do if Mr. or Ms. Grabby hands just took my DS without asking. I don't even just grab him out of DH's hands, and he doesn't do that to me either. Weird.

If she tries it again, say something. She might have lost her mind around family. (My MIL hoards our DS when we're with her side of the family. I can't tell if she's boasting about how cute her grandson is, or she's worried if he passes into someone's hands she'll never see him again.) Either way, if he's not crying, I see it as a chance to have my hands free for awhile.

  • Thanks for all the feedback - was at an appt.Cool

I wasn't mad/bent out of shape - just shocked - I in no way mind her holding him - I am just used to other people asking - "Do you mind" or "Can I hold him?" -  I am thrilled to give my back a break and let her walk him around..
