help! horrible diaper rash

Will and Dash have been sick for the last few days, and although the puking seems to be over, they're still having really bad diarrhea. I mean REALLY bad - it's like tinted water and extremely explosive (we get leaks pretty much every single time they poo, and I can count on one hand the number of leaks we've had up until now - it's just so thin and watery and there's sooooo much of it that it runs out).

It also seems to be pretty acidic, and even though we're changing them ASAP once they poo, because of the frequency and nastiness of the diarrhea, they both now have pretty awful diaper rash. It's so bad that they scream when they poo and when we clean them up. Crying

We haven't had to deal with this before (we must have had good luck until now), and I'm desperately searching for a remedy. I know that letting their little bums air out with no diaper is probably the best method, but they're still having such explosive diarrhea that it's not really an option right now. Do we just have to suck it up and wait until the diarrhea is over before we can really do anything about it?

Re: help! horrible diaper rash

  • Poor little guys!

I put Mylanta on a cotton swab and dab it on.  It neutralizes the acid.  One of the docs at work orders that for diaper rash.  But otherwise, yeah, airing it out seems to work best.

  • Henry had awful diarrhea when he was on antibiotics and the only thing that helped was Triple Paste.  I don't know if they have there, but our pedi recommended it and it's great.

I'd never heard of this, but Ihave some Mylanta so I'll give it a shot, thank you!

No, we don't have it here unfortunately. Sad The best I can do is Desitin (it has the highest zinc oxide % of all the brands available here).

  • I am so sorry! Ugh. Not fun. And a horrible way to celebrate turning 1. Boo.

I've not done the Mylanta, but do swear by zinc-based cream and healing calendula cream. I use California Baby products. We let her air out too...since that's not quite an option for you right now, I'd wait until the loose bowels pass and then try letting them have some diaper-free time.

Aveeno baths also help...it's colloidal oatmeal...not sure if you'd have something similar there or not.

Yes! I read this somewhere else today and found some at the store this morning. We gave them a bath and then about 10 min of diaper free time in the bathroom (with the floor well covered with towels lol) before slathering them up in Desitin again. Hopefully we can do it again tonight...and hopefully the diarrhea will pass soon so we can give them longer diaper-free time!

  • I know this doesn't help the other end, but have you tried putting them on the BRAT diet to se eif it helps the diarrhea?

Triple Paste is our go to thing too.  Have you asked the doc about it?

I had kind of tried the BRAT diet, but without much success...they didn't want to eat apples or toast, have difficulty picking up rice (they get frustrated because it's so small and piece-y) and bananas are worth more than gold here right now so we're not buying them at the moment. Sad But it looks like the runs are finishing up now anyway of their own accord, thankfully!

Triple Paste just isn't used here. I don't know why. *shrug*

  • I am a little late coming in, but we use A&D on LO's bum.  We were using zinc products (Destin or Boudreaux's) and she got a really bad diaper rash.  Almost as soon as we switched, it cleared up.  She has never had another rash since switching so we've stuck with the A&D.

  • sorry they got sick and got rashes :(

i was just going to say that the only time i can get A to sit still is by putting her on the potty LOL  so, with blowout diarrhea that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for the boys to be on the potty for 15 min of naked bum time to help w/the rashes :) since most homes don't have adjacent toilets (LOL) i guess you'd have to have them take turns :) but it sounds like they are getting better now so you can just let them run around naked.....but just an idea for future reference :P
