TTC after Mirena? (Ticker Warning)

*lurker here!*

DH and I are still trying to decide if we will start TTC in August (I hope so!), and I currently have Mirena in. It was put in last year when DS was 7 weeks. I've been reading here and on other sites that it can take a while for AF and O to become more regular after Mirena is removed. Have you found that was the case for you? If so, how long did it take for you to become more regulated?

I am still BFing DS but down to 3 times a day. I'm thinking it would be a good thing to have the Mirena removed to see if AF returns while I am still BFing, and if not try to be all the way weaned when we start TTC. I signed up with FF to begin charting, started temping this morning, and am checking CM already. We were very lucky to have a surprise BFP with DS, so TTC will be new to us this time around. If you had experience with Mirena, please share any info you have regarding removal and your experience following removal. The info you ladies have is incredibly insightful!

TIA for any info you have :0)

  • I had Mirena removed in Feb. and my cycles are not quite regular yet. We're going to start TTC next month, so I guess I c.an let you know how that goes.

  • I took just regular 'ol BCP, but I'd recommend you take it out. The sooner the better. I stopped the pills in Jan, and here it is, four months later, and I've only O'd once. BC messes with you...I'm not taking it again until I am for sure done with wanting babies.

    Good luck!!

  • I had a mirena and loved it. It only took a month to conceive after removing it, but I ended up miscarrying (2 back to back losses) and then got pregnant with DS2...so technically it took about 5 months to conceive.

It wasn't too bad to remove..just a bit of discomfort and some cramping.

If I could do it over again, I probably would have waited a few months to TTC while my body was re-adjusting.

    Good luck!

  • I didn't have Mirena but was on Depo. If I were you I'd have it removed ASAP so your body can start getting back to normal. Like a PP said, BC messes with your body so much, and I too will not be back on it until I'm definitely done having kids. GL!
  • Sorry about the giant siggy, I will fix that once I'm not bumping from my phone again. Thanks for all your input though, hopefully DH will agree it is time for the Mirena to come out. Reading your responses really has be thinking it is time to do so to let my body 'recover'.

  • I currently have Mirena and plan to have it removed in early June. We want to start TTC in August in hopes that this will give my body some time to adjust after BC. Good luck!

  • I had my Mirena removed on March 31st after having it in for 2 years. I had AF about 10 days after removal. The removal was a very sharp pain and then it was over. Definately not as painful as the insertion was. I started charting the first day of AF things are a little erratic but my body seems to be regulating itself pretty well. I have 3 friends that recently had their Mirena removed and all had BFP within 3 months of removal so I have my fingers crossed. Hopefully things work out well for you as well!

  • Mine was removed 12/09/10.  It wasnt bad, about a week after removal I got AF.  then 1 1/2 weeks later AF again.  Now its about a 29 day cycle same as before but in Feb my cycle was 36 days -don't know what that was about.  Now I am late again and cant help but worry it's another 36 day cycle. :(  I guess only time will tell.  Good luck!
