time out spot?

We've been doing "time out" for a little while now, but mostly just in our arms making him stay still and in place. It's been rare, just for big things (he went through a biting phase around 13 months). Well, we're starting to see a few more things we'd like to halt, and I'm reading 123 Magic, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a time out spot. I really don't want to do his crib, to avoid any bad associations with that. When did you expect your child to stay somewhere on their own for time outs? Where did you pick? I've just started 123, so sorry if this is answered in the book for the littlest guys!

  • we use a corner and we stay w/ her counting to 150 (she's 2.5 now so 2.5 mins). If she is screaming,we tell her time-out will start when she stops screaming

  • We have the girls sit in front of the front door.  Just happens to be a spot that we can keep our eye on while we're in the kitchen.  I wouldn't use their room or bed/crib - I don't think it's much of a time out if they get to be somewhere where they can reach their toys or lay down and nap.

The most hilarious thing is when we're at someone's house, and I say "that's it, go to time out."  The girls sort of panic like "where the heck am I supposed to go?" but then they ALWAYS find a place.  They pick it themselves - it's quite clever actually.  We've done this in Home Depot even.

  • We use the foyer by the front door as well.  She's getting better, once i start counting, she usually changes her behavior.  Although she is starting to get more defiant, so I am certain that won't last for long.
  • I just do it in a living room corner where there aren't any toys or distractions nearby.

  • I need to get more than 10 pages into 1-2-3 Magic to implement time outs I think, but I've already picked out DD's time out spot.  We have a square of FLOR carpet in the hallway at the door to the garage.  It's very visible (in the middle of our open floor plan house), clearly delineated (a literal square on the floor), and there are rarely good toys within reach.  I hope my grand plan works out once we do start giving time outs :P

  • We also use a corner.  It works well because there are corners everywhere. :)

  • DS is a thrasher and will throw himself backwards and hit his head, so we use a chair.

  • I've been wondering about this too - we've been using his crib, but we need to change that b/c we want to get him to sleep there at some point.  Maybe I'll try to find a corner.  Usually it works best if he can't see us though.  I feel your pain.
  • At their youngest it was a small anywhere chair but once they were able to sit there for the time out (2yo for my kids but some are able to do it sooner) it was the bottom step.  As pp said it is just a spot I can easily see from many points downstairs.
