2 sacs, 1 viable

Someone suggested I might have better luck posting this here, thank you!

 Hi there!

Yesterday I had an early ultrasound, I'm 5weeks 4days. The tech found 2 sacs. He mentioned that one sac is viable and the other not due to lack of echogenic rings. Has anyone experienced this before? I'm wondering if there is a name for this sack without rings and what does it mean, is it then really still considered a gestational sac? I have not had a chance to speak with the Dr. yet. The viable sac measured just 5 weeks and both sacs were located where they should be. I'm 34, a mom of 2, and fraternal twins run on my mom's side. The one ultrasound picture that I was sent home with is a perfect ying yang reflecting 2 same size sacs.

  • Congrats on your pregnancy.  Although it was nice of the tech to comment, most people on here would say it's too early for any definitive answer.

The tech was talking about a double decidual sign which is one of the earliest things you see.  They often use that to differentiate an intrauterine pregnancy from a pseudosac.

    Only time will tell!

  • During this pregnancy I had one viable sac (a)with a fetus at 6 week 2 days, (measuring at 6 weeks even) and one sac(b) with just a very faint yolk sac in it. A week later Sac A had developed to 7 weeks 2 days (9 days of growth in one week) and sac b was a vanishing twin..... It would have been much better for you have to seen a dr after the u/s. They did that to me during my first twin pregnancy. The U/S tech told me to look up VTS because at 5 weeks 3 days only one of my twins had a heartbeat. The Nurse Practioner just said "sorry this happens sometimes with early u/s" as I walked out the door. One week later I had two healthy babies in there. I was scared for a week!!!!  So this story just goes to show.... you never know. They should be repeating your u/s in a week to see what is going on, if not I would call and demand one.
