"A line is a line" goes professional

We (as in the nurses) now do the urine pregnancy tests for our patients in the ER. It allows us to get trauma patients to the CT scan faster and make safer decisions. 3 minutes vs up to an hour for lab to get and result it out. We use the same ones y'all have seen from the $1 or the new HEB cheapies.

I now get to educate a whole lotta people on the "a line is a line" business =)

This is going to sound crazy but I love doing the urine pregnancy tests. A lot of the other nurses complain because it's extra work for us. But for me, it's all the suspense with none of the responsibility! I volunteer to do them for other nurses.

  • Couldn't you just tell them, "Hey, go to the Dollar Store and get a test.  Pee on it.  Call your doctor if you see 2 lines."

Makes me wonder how much those people are paying for a pee test at the ER!  :)

I think she's doing them to rule out the PG possibility for treatment purposes not that they're coming in to get tested. At least that's how I read it.

ah, that makes much more sense!  haha.  I was like, "WTF!?"  My candy-addled brain should not be trying to read right now.

  • Ohhh... it's a little bit of both. We have to make sure there's not a concern for pregnancy in many situations. Doesn't matter if you claim to be a virgin, a Lesbian who has never been with a man or haven't been with anyone "in a long time". If you have a uterus... you can get pregnant. Accidents, surprises, miracles, call them what you will. We've seen it all.

It's sort of a bad ER joke. The patient probably remembers her last period (but pretends not to) or at least as some idea of when she got pregnant. May have already taken a test at home really. But they want to know how far along they are or see the baby on ultrasound. So they pretend not to know they're pregnant and complain of the mysterious severe "abdominal pain" and/or severe nausea ;). I honestly don't know the numbers or payment rate on those kinds of cases.

You know all the bump posts about "Do you think I could be pregnant if ____" Yeah. We take a fair amout of phone calls like that. Hmm I resist the urge to say "Hold the phone to your belly for 5 seconds." and then say "Congratulations! You're pregnant!!"
