HI all! I would like to start my one month old on one bottle a day, so that I can gradually increase it with BM and start formula by the time I go back to work in June. Does anyone have any tips on doing this? I pumped one time after my morning feeding and pumped about 2.5 oz. I wouldn't think this would be enough to feed, right? I also have some frozen in the fridge from when my milk first came in. Can you mix the new milk with the old, or should I pump during the time she'd normally have the bottle?
When do you suggest I start the bottle? I would like to do it so DH can do a feeding and I can sleep.
Thanks!
Re: How to start bottle
I would introduce the bottle now, my LC said it was a good time around a month. My LO is a healthy eater and took the bottle right away, we plan on giving her one once a week since I EBF. I would start with a small amount at first in case she rejects the bottle and you need to find a bottle she likes. (you don't want to waste milk) I bought 3 brands of bottle but LO took the first one I introduced, Avent. Also, I left the room when she took it, supposedly baby's can smell their mother (milk I think) up to 20 ft away...I think I read this somewhere. You can mix new milk with old, some mom's pump a little new and put it with the defrosted. The 2.5 oz is not really an indication of how much LO is getting from the breast since they are more efficient at getting it. I only pump about an ounce but I know she's getting more than that (my LC weighed her after feeding) some women just don't get as much pumping. Look online to see how much your LO should be eating for her weight. I would pump if she's going to get a bottle too then you can add it to your freezer stash. I am no BF guru since this is my first but hopefully I helped a little!
Same with my LO! I'm only BFing and pumping, but ever since he was a couple weeks old I've been pumping once a day so DH can do a bottle feeding. Sometimes if we're having visitors or going somewhere I'll pump beforehand, too. DS has never had any trouble taking a bottle and it doesn't seem to give him nipple confusion. He still prefers the breast, but he will take the bottle. At first he wouldn't take it from me but now he will.
