Pregnant after a Loss

Biophysical Profile Question

Hello ladies, I am starting weekly biophysical profiles this Wed and I am not exactly sure what to expect. All my doctor really told me is that we would get a score out of 8 each week and they would compare the results weekly. For those of you that have had one how long does it take and what exactly do they look at? I am really glad I will get to see little one every week just not really sure what to expect so any information would be much appreciated. Also do you need a full bladder? Thanks ladies hope you all have a great week!

Re: Biophysical Profile Question

  • I have not had one but I do work in the NICU and know a tiny bit about it. I believe it's an ultrasound and/or NST.They look at things like fluid volume, baby's heartrate, how much baby moves, and can't remember the other categories. Each category gets a score and if you get a low score then a chance of delivery goes up. It looks at overall health of your baby.

Since I haven't had one I can't tell you the basics like if you need a full bladder or not. Good luck!

  • yes to above plus they watch to see if the baby is practicing breathing (although I've never quite understood that whole concept).  At mine they also did a weight check and checked blood flow through the cord.

I don't think I ever had to have a full bladder.  I think the idea of the full bladder is when the baby is super small and a full bladder helps push the baby up for a better picture (or something like that).  At the point of my BPP, the baby was probably about 4-5lbs.

  • You will have to drink juice before the BBP to make sure the LO is active. I have them weekly since 29 weeks and I drink 2 cups of apple juice about 20 mins before.
