Question about that feeling when your milk lets down...

I've heard from some people that eventually the "pins and needles" feeling when your milk lets down gets to be less painful. Does anyone know if that's true? It's not really "painful" per se, but to me, it feels like when you go to get your blood drawn and they tie the rubber strap around your arm--but it feels like my whole chest is being constricted that way. If I didn't realize it was my breasts and thought it was my chest, I'm pretty sure I'd think I was having a heart attack...

What's everyone else's experience of what it feels like now? And BTDTs, does it get less painful, or do you think you just get used to it?

  • I don't feel let down at all and wonder if there is something wrong with me. He seems to be eating fine, so hopefully that's normal.

  • With my son, the let down pain subsided once my milk regulated itself. I also stopped overproducing and leaking. It will take some time, especially since these little ones are constantly having growth spurts.

  • I don't feel anything either!

  • Mine definitely lessened in intensity over the months - by the end (I nursed almost 2 years) I didn't feel anything at all.

And it's totally normal to never feel letdown too ;-)

  • I haven't felt it yet.

I just asked about painful let down on the bf board. I have a painful pins and needles let down, but it is all in my breasts, it kind of starts at the top and "trickles down" to my nipples.

RG, not everyone feels it, there is nothing wrong with you.
Haha, thanks. I figured everything was okay because he is eating plenty and I can hear him slurping down, but I just never felt the let down and didn't remember reading about it one way or the other.

I'm sorry it's painful for you, too, but I'm glad I'm not the only one (sorry if that's selfish) :-) I don't feel the "trickle down"; I just feel that constricted feeling a the tops of my breasts. Lucky us!

This is what it's like for me.

By the end of nursing Sawyer - 26 months - I didn't notice anything at all though so it will likely subside.

Mine feels just like that too. It's in both breasts as well. Not painful but totally uncomfy!

  • If my boobs are really full, it's more painful then when they are less full, also subsequent letdowns during a feeding are less painful, I have found that it doesn't get better, you just get used to it.
