opinions on 3d/4d ultrasound @ 14wks

I just scheduled an ultrasound for fri I will be 14 wks 5 days and Im wondering if they will be able to determine the gender.  Its an elective ultrasound so its an out of pocket cost.  Should I just try to be patient and save that money for something else.

  • Waste of money IMO.

  • The baby is still to small at that point you would still be going off of angle dangle. I would wait atleast til 16 weeks
  • I wouldn't do it, however 4 of my friends had them done (all between 14 and 15 weeks) and each one was told the sex which later turned out to be correct.  I know there's a place near me that guarantees telling you the sex at 14 weeks, but I personally wouldn't do it.

I think 16 weeks is a better bet.

  • I would wait until at least 16 weeks. I am a nurse in an OB clinic and it seems like at least once a week I hear about someone being told wrong from a 4d place.
  • Thanks ladies for your opinion. I guess I will be cancelling that appt tomorrow and just wait. I already have an appt for my anatomy scan early @ 16wks and the dr say that she will tell the gender then. Im just so impatient. I guess I need to learn some patience

  • Strange enough, I was told at my NT scan on Friday when I was 12w6d. I was not expecting it at all, but the doctor said "do you want to know the gender?" He said he has a 93% success rate, but not to go buying things or telling people yet. I am not sure what to believe, it seems way too early!

  • What is the rush?  I wouldn't waste my money...especially when finding out gender that early is not very reliable.  UNLESS you have a reason to want/need to know this early.  Plus, the baby is so small and not developed, it kind of takes the fun out of the 3D aspects.

You gone through the hell of the first trimester- you're almost there.  Just think of the ladies that have to wait until 20-23 weeks to have this done. Tongue Tied

  • Waste of money at 14 weeks....if its a girl, it will be harder to see. I think 3D ultrasound are better at around 28-30weeks...the baby has a little more fat on their face and actually looks more like a baby.

  • That's a really good question - one I had at first too.  Most places do NOT like to even do 3D/4D ultrasound before 25 or so weeks because the baby is so skinny.  I had called a couple places in town and they said that they always do the gender scans in 2D because they can see it earlier - as early as 16 weeks.  I'd wait a couple more weeks and then give it a shot - we're getting ours done at 16w5d in 2D and I've got my fingers crossed they're able to do it.  I'd save the money for a 3D/4D until later in your pregnancy when the baby has some fat on it.  :)
