Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does your LO pull their hair out?

DD has had a habit of running her fingers through her hair and pulling it out sometimes even for a long time now.  She has a decidedly thin area on the left (it's pretty pronounced).  She is NOT a baby so just giving her something to hold doesn't do anything for it the way it did when she was an infant.

Anybody got any advise?

I should add that she has had 3 haircuts to keep it short so it won't get tangly but she just pulls out the hair that isn't tangled now.

Re: Does your LO pull their hair out?

  • Ouch! DS doesn't do this but he does sometimes hit himself when he's frustrated.  I think it's just a stage where there's a lot of frustration b/c of lack of verbal skills. Sorry I don't have any advice!

  • The behavior of pulling out one's own hair is called trichotillomania. If you google "toddlers and trichotillomania", there are a lot of great resources! Sorry I'm in a hurry and can't link them directly but there are several good ones. It's not an uncommon problem and she'll likely outgrow it. HTH!
  • No my kids don't.  My sister has trichotillomania though.  Didn't manifest itself until middle school and still has it as a mom of 3.
  • DD does this. When she's tired she twirls the hair above her ears (both sides) and often pulls some out. Her hair is noticably thinner on both sides. I don't think she does it on purpose but I could be wrong. I wish I knew what to do about it. I plan to talk to her pedi at the next appointment.
