LO getting too hot

I went outside today. LO seemed to get really hot... both in the carseat even though I had the AC cranked in my vehicle and in the Ergo. How do I keep her cool in this wretched heat?! Or perhaps I just have to stay inside all summer....

Re: LO getting too hot

  • Yes I think you need to stay inside if she is only 2.5 weeks old. My LO is 22 months old and he is totally overheating right now. When he was a baby in the summer we spent the vast majority of his first 2 months indoors for sure.

  • How many clothes did you have on her?  DD was born in September but it was still really hot out.  She just wore a onsie all the time, everywhere we went.

  • I hear ya! I had a late May baby and a late June baby. No way I could have stayed home until it cooled off. I would have gone crazy pants.

Some things I did- Dress lightly and bring layers. The boys would be in the car in a onesie and I would bring pants in our diaper bag to put on them once we were in a building w/ a/c.  Start the car and let the a/c fun for a bit before loading them (I don't do this anymore since we have back temp control- it cools off much faster now). Go out early morning, plan to stay home in the afternoons. The mornings aren't that bad, even in the summer.

  • I just had her in a onesie. And I have to go out for necessities eventually... maybe I'll go to the grocery at 10 pm when it's 70 outside. I love Austin but so need to move back to New England.

  • Of course you can go out.  Just dress your little one in layers.  A onesie is perfectly acceptable attire at such a young age.  Keep her hydrated with formula or breastmilk and you'll be fine.  She'll let you know if she's getting too hot.   You can always cover her with a blanket if she gets a little chilled.

There are plenty of women worldwide who give birth and have infants in heat worse than this, with no a/c.   Enjoy getting out and about with your baby - it helps prevent the post-baby blues.

  • I'm no anthropologist, but I'm guessing that in other climates/cultures where the weather gets as hot as here, people young and old keep in the shade during the heat of the day. Staying out of the sun is very important to young delicate skin too. Even in the car, the rays penetrate the windows and care should be taken to avoid excessive exposure. It's impossible to cover an infant head to toe in sunblock everyday.

Stick to the early morning hours and plan to be indoors by 11-12. In Texas, the heat does still tend to build up after 3pm but the rays are less intense. Abby was born Aug 1st and we spent the rest of the summer indoors unless it was first thing in the morning. Emily was a Dec baby but we still spent a good deal of time inside during the summer. Babies are very sensitive to overheating and by the time a baby is showing signs of heat exhaustion, it may be too late. But I do encourage you to ask your pediatrician and see what their advice may be.

If you're using the Ergo, are you bringing the infant carrier indoors? I know it's a PITA but whenever possible, bring the carrier inside. The plastic and padding retain a lot of heat and placing a newborn in a hot seat is going to make them hot(ter) very quickly. An already hot baby + hot carseat is not good. When it is left in the car, make sure it's shielded from the sun. For as little as $7, you can get a cover similiar to a sunshade (which is what we have). I plan on investing in a full ice pack system (Baby Bee Cool) this year as I'd like to get out with the girls more without having to worry about them being so hot. Abby is old enough to verbalize already "Mommy, I'm too hoooooooot in my carseat".
