Maternity Swimsuit vs. Regular swimsuit?

What's the big difference? Are maternity swimsuits worth it? I have never seen one IRL, so I am just curious what I should get and how they are even different from each other (not one pieces, either a bikini or tankini). I am so getting excited for summer!.

Re: Maternity Swimsuit vs. Regular swimsuit?

  • Maternity swimsuits are cut in a way so there's a little more fabric to cover IMO.

As a result they just feel better/fit better. Sometimes buying in a bigger size makes the swimsuit saggin/uncomfy/fit in the wrong areas.

In my first pregnancy I just wore a regular two piece in a bigger size. It worked well for me. I was also not as pregnant at the time.  However, this time, I couldn't find a decent swimsuit in a bigger size that still covered me decently. I went maternity and I don't want to go back..lol.

Long story short, it's a matter of what you find and like.

  • Maternity are a lot more comfortable and cover your bump.  I have to go get one soon, I lost the top to my last one from when I was pregnant with DD.  Wish I would have saved it.

I got a maternity swimsuit.  I tried on a few different things and like PP said, they just fit better (they covered my belly).  You will just have to try on a few.  I got mine from Target for a good price.

  • They are cut to fit a pregnant body.  You should try on a maternity suit. You will see.

  • My main reason for getting a maternity suit is that I needed more fabric to cover my giant knockers. I was not all about major cleavage whilst toting my DD to mommy and me swim lessons :)

Plus had I just kept using the one I had and she had gotten ahold of it in the pool....well no one is ready for all that show

Have you tried it on?  Mine DOES NOT even go over my bump anymore.  LOL!

Not yet....the neighborhood pool isn't going to open until mid-May anyways, so I figure my neighbors will get a good looksie at the belly for less than 2 months. If I wasn't due until Sept, I wouold consider buying a mat swimsuit, but for less than 2 months worth of wear? Screw it. Ill-fitting bathing suit, here I come! Wink

  • Ack I am struggling with this as well! Living in Chicago, with no one close to me owning/having a pool, and being due in July I struggle with the idea of buying a mat. suit for $40+? I was at Target the other day and there were last seasons suits on clearance so I grabbed the biggest tankini top I could find and that would fit my little boobies (Lg.) and it just barely covered past my belly button. And hello, I'm only 27 weeks.... The bottoms looked great, but the top just fit odd.

I'm going on a mini vaca first weekend in June and that's the only time I'll wear a suit probably this year, so I've come to the conclusion, the folks in Michigan can gasp at the super pregnant chick rockin' a bikini for a few days. :P

    wow. that was long.

I did that this weekend.  Actually, just earlier, but in GA.  There are no places around here to go shopping for a maternity swim suit, so I just put on my old one and went for it.  Besides, it's already like 90 plus degrees, so the less fabric the better!

  • I've been trying on various maternity swimsuits the past few days. The tops are definitely more comfortable as they give me the support and coverage I need for the girls. The bottoms I've been a bit disappointed in. I like that the front curves down some to lay below the bump and that is definitely a lot more comfortable than a normal suit, however I haven't been finding the coverage/styles of bottoms that I like. I also don't mind my bump, so I'm actually okay with putting on an actual bikini, but the tankini style of a lot of the maternity ones were pretty cute.

  • No swimsuit for me this year, we live near a lake and the water rises really high and doesnt come down until late june/early july.. so theres no point.  I might want one to wear afterwards but I'll probably feel more comfortable in beach cover ups insetad.
  • I bought one from Motherhood when we went on our Honeymoon. It has more coverage and is longer to cover the bump. It was comfy and I liked it when I tried it on in the store, but I ended up wearing bikinis for most of our trip. The tankini part rode up a lot in the water and since I'm so used to wearing bikinis it just got uncomfy for me. I do like the bottoms though since they cover up a bit more. I know my booty has gotten huge, so they don't fit that great into the bikini bottoms like they used to :(
